Dano Hodad

Joe Barnes (iamtheoriginaltoblave) - 03 Apr 2003 23:10:33

I was considering a '57 reissue MIM Stratocaster for my first 'real' guitar,
but I am wondering about the Hodad.
Harmony Central gear reviews aren't the gospel, but the reviews for the
Hodad were mostly very positive.
Is it really a decent guitar, or were the reviewers all on the Danelectro
payroll?

I have a Hodad, but mine doesn't have the tremolo system. I
personally love it -- it plays smoothly, and the push-pull tone pots
can really generate some great surfy twang. While a Strat would
probably be a more versatile guitar, as far as playing in various
styles, I think a hodad would probably be a better value.
The one thing to look out for is the width of the fretboard -- it
seems to me to be a little wider than most Fender necks are... could
be my imagination because it's a somewhat more "shallow" neck, but
that's just something to keep in mind... but I'd give my Hodad a 4/4
star review.

The hodad is not a strat...but it is a fine surf machine. I
really enjoy my Hodad, it has a rock solid maple neck and
the quality of mine is superb. The tremolo sytem (a bigsby
clone) functions well, the guitar retains tune well. I love
mine! The masonite body is cool for feedback when I want
it. The twang is absolutely bitchen!
I have heard rumours of quality control issues re:
danelectros. I reccomend that you go a try one out for
yourself before you buy.
DP
ps: I have heard quality contol rumours about MIM Fenders
too. You might want to play one of those in person before
buying also.
good luck!

I've got a Hodad Baritone guitar that is amazing!!! A friend of mine
who plays in a Mummies/Invisible Men-style band has one with a
tremolo bar, and the sound is fantastic. He does run through a Vox
amp.

I'm with Bill, here . . . his comments are right on the money! I've got a
Hodad w/ trem, and it sounds great! I've got 11 flats on it - twang to
spare! Great for rockabilly stuff, too . . .
Yeah, the neck does seem wide (especially after I play my AV Jag), but it
still plays pretty well. With a good set-up, these can be pretty fine
playing guitars . . .and I'm not on the Danelectro payroll! I think they're
listed as "discontinued", so you may have trouble finding them - I did spot
a few on e-bay a while back though. The "faux" Bigsby works just fine - I
highly recommend it.

Dick, DP, and all others interested on the list...
Here's what I offically know about Dano at the moment. They are in
a period of re-desigining and whatnot, and have therefore stopped
production on any and all guitars. Word on the street has it that
within a year or two, they'll be busting out with all new designs
and models.
So, if you can find a Dano at a good price, GRAB IT... the ones run
recently (within the last 5 years) are starting to drum up some
collector interest, since they are quality guitars with the great
vintage look in a relatively short run.
I could be wrong, but I work at a music shop, and not only is this
what I'm supposed to tell customers, but I've heard the same from
other shops that I've been in.

Thanks, Bill - interesting info . . . makes me wonder what the re-designed
guitars will look (and sound) like . . . hmmm . . .

Dangit, that means if I want a Longhorn bass I'd
better start looking. Are there any dealers that
still have Dano's in stock? I looked around at buying
a new Longhorn a while back and was suprised to find
that nobody was stocking the guitars, just the pedals
and accessories. This new information explain that.
I'm wondering now, what else would Dano do? I mean,
they've got a pretty clear and unique niche in lots of
different types of music and all their designs are
pretty classic. I'm not sure I like the idea of them
revamping everything.
Richard

Yeah,
I heard the same story from the Dano rep here in Canada when I was
trying to track down a longhorn. He said the reissues weren't being
made at the present time.
