My amplifier search goes on and I keep hearing about
close vs. open back speaker cabs. Just exactly what
is the difference? I can take a guess, but what is it
about closed cabs that make them better suited to
surf? Would this also make the less suitable for
other things?

Well I hope to gain some experience in this area soon when I get my Showman
head back from the tech. In the meantime, I've been playing my Hot Rod
DeVille through the Dual Showman cabinet. At first I still had the back
panel off of the cabinet. It sounded good but kind of mushy and unfocused.
Just for fun I put the back panel back on the cabinet. The whole inside of
the cabinet and back are lined with fiberglass insulation. I was not
expecting to hear any difference, but I was surprised: it is now more
focused and punchier. And this was at a fairly low volume. I'll be
experimenting with this some more when I get the Showman head back.
I am also eager to hear what the differences are between the Hot Rod DeVille
and Showman when played through the same cabinet (either the HRDV or Showman
cabs). I'll be doing some A/B tests soon I hope.
I don't think anyone has said closed backs are better for surf (well except
maybe Dick Dale). They sound different to my ears in my limited experience
but I think they have trade-offs just like everything else.

The punchiness of he sound is the fender sound to the
max. Its a sound associated with the sixties more than
previous and later decades, especially surf, since
they all had them. So its the trad sound. I guess they
are more efficient too, because the sound waves cant
cancel each other out by being reflected from some
wall around the back of the stage or in a small
studio.

This discussion raises and interesting question, one I look forward to
Brian beginning to answer: how do Fender's Modern Tube Amps (i.e. the
Hot Rods, not the reissues) stack up against the vintage amps?
I use a very nice, lightly modified HRDlx...it's very "spiky" on the
treble end and is a little harsh sounding and classic-rock sounding,
to my ears. Not to say this is bad, but I wonder if I'd be happier
replacing it with a vintage amp, a Fender reissue, or some boutique
amp clone of the early Fender tube amp designs that I have yet to
discover, i.e. a Holland, Victoria, etc. Or if I should just buy a Line 6!
Well, it's just something that has been on my mind.
