For all you GAS sufferers out there: Just spotted a post on the FDP
about this . . . Musicians' Friend has a "web special" on the Black
RI reverb tanks - $349.99, with free shipping, I believe. Not a bad
deal if you're looking for one of those black tanks . . .

Hi,
Cool, but what is the difference between a Black tank and Blonde
Re-issue tank?
I got the chance to buy a used/new Blonde "63 reverb tank for a "Low"
European price...
(still way more expensive then in the U.S.....)
Any opinions are most welcome,
Jerry S. from Belgium.
The Tank comes with the original box, diagram foot switch etc....I gave
it a test drive and is sounded just great....
New tanks are 750$ here in Belgium, and that is the "bottom"
price.....They are listed at a huge 800$....Aaaaaagggghhhhh....what a
ripoff...

Black, brown, blonde, tweed even, they're all the same electronicly.
I bought a black tolex reissue when they first came out in 1993. I got the
black to match the Super Amp I had at the time. When I got my blonde
Showman in 1994, I traded my black reverb for a blonde one from a friend who
had a blackface Bassman. Kept the blonde until I got my mits on a genie '63
brown reverb I still have. Both the black and blonde sounded the same
stock, and upgraded to 6K6 tubes.
I think MF is getting away with charging a premium since Fender stopped the
regular production black tolex reverbs a while ago, making these "limited"
editions.

Hi Mel,
Nice, thanks for the advice.
How "needful" is the 6K6 tube intead of the 6L6 in the re-issue tank?
(or the recap job)
And how would you describe the difference between a Vintage and re-issue
tank, aside from the
6K6 issue.
Thanks,
Jerry S. from Belgium

"needful" is subjective. Personally, I found the reissues sound harsh in
the high frequencies. Switching from the 6V6 to the 6K6 reduces the gain
and mellows the high end a little. I've also tried using a 12AT7 in place
of the 12AX7, it's a lower gain tube and mellows the tone a bit more. Same
with the tone cap mod. Mind you, there's still huge amounts of splash, it's
just not as shrill.
Other than the tubes, I'd say my experience with the reissues is that they
are built well, and sound very similar to the originals. The biggest
problem I had with the ones I owned was that high end shrill tone. I never
could completely get rid of it. Of course it was only really an issue when
playing loud with lots of reverb, but that's something I do fairly often.
That being said, I've heard other guitar players get great tones with the
reissues, so it may also be that the shrill tone isn't a problem at audience
distances from the amp.

Crap. I didn't need to hear this. My brown reissue 'verb doesn't match my
black Showman....

I just want to add that I also noticed a harshness to my reissue unit. Doing
the NOS 6K6 and cap mod improved things a lot. I still think there is some,
not a lot, but some lingering harshness to it. It's really only noticeable
to me when I use gobs of reverb when played loud. So ditto me with Mel.
Hey Mel/Ferenc...hows the new Mach IV coming along? Good luck on that.
