SD-1 "Vintage" Pups for Jaguar...opinions?

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 26 Mar 2003 09:15:35

I am bidding on some Seymour Duncan SD-1 Vintage pickups for Jaguar on
EBay, and wanted to know: am I stupid? Are these any good? After
placing my bids, I went and looked at some reviews on Harmony Central,
and both reviewers slammed these pickups as not sounding at all
"vintage" (whatever that means) and not sounding like original Jag pups.
Anybody tried these? And what is your opinion of them? Are the other
SD pups for Jag, either the hot of the quarter pounders, better for
the surf sound.
P.S. I intend to put these on a Japanese reissue.

Hi,
I heard that Fender re-issue pick ups sound more like the original then
the SD-1.
You should be able to get these new for $ 40 a piece.
Accourding to Mel, they sound close to the original.
It all depends on the sound you are after. I would not get the SD Hot or
Quarter pounder for the surf sound.
They are both hother then the original Jagmaster pick ups with a higher
tone end and less mid.
Hope this helps,
Jerry S. from Belgium "just repeating what he read on this topic"
Anyway, check out the "fenderforum.com" and click on Jaguars and
Jazzmaster or go to Mel's page

I had the SD vintage Jazzmaster pickup in one of my JMs a while ago, and was
satisfied with it. I have the Fender USRI pickups in my Jag, and I'm also
satisfied with them.
I think you've got to consider availability in your location, and also that
either the SD or the USRI pickups will be a big enhancement over the stock
MIJ pickups.

Harmony-Central is a good site, but the disadvantage
to having a completely open forum like that is that
you are always going to get trolls who come in and
just slander things for no apparent reason, or be
extremely derogatory about something just because they
didn't like it. I can't believe that anything that
Seymour Duncan makes could not be any good, it just
might not be what you're looking for; you can bet that
they're a vast improvement over the MIJ pups (I
remember mine, they weren't very good). Take Jerry's
advice and head to the Fender Forum for cooler-headed
and more informed opinions.

Don't listen to Harmony Central. People either review the stuff
because they love what they got or they hate what they got -- you
never have an objective opinion. For all you know, the reviewers
were trying to capture Cobain's old Jag sound, and couldn't because
of the twang....
And on that note, I put SD Vintage pickups in my Jag back in January,
and have nothing but good things to say about them. Definitely worth
every cent!
