This Weekends Surf Programs

JEFF BARBER (sixage) - 25 Mar 2003 14:03:12

Join us at the Autry Museum this Saturday and Sunday for some exciting
programs in conjunction with Women's History Month and the museum's
current exhibition "Ocean View: Depiction of Southern California Beach
Culture."
Saturday, March 29
Meet the Real Gidget!
To augment our exhibit Ocean View: The Depiction of Southern California
Coastal Lifestyle, meet Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, the real Gidget of book,
film, and television fame! Ms. Zuckerman will talk about her early life
on the beach, which led to the book written by her father that started
it all. The 40th anniversary edition of Surfer magazine ranked her the
seventh most influential surfer of the 20th century because her story
drew people to the sport. The book originally sold a half million
copies, and Gidget was the first of the beach movies. A screening of the
1959 film Gidget will follow the talk. This program will take place in
the Wells Fargo Theatre at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free for museum
members, $5 for nonmembers.
Sunday, March 30
Meet the Women of Surfing
Meet three generations of women surfers as we celebrate Women’s
History Month and the exhibition Ocean View: The Depiction of Southern
California Coastal Lifestyle. Joyce Hoffman won the 1965 U.S. Surfboard
Championships and was world champion in 1966–1967. Kim Hamrock is a
four-time U.S. Women’s Surfing Champion and is one of only two women
on the USA World Champion Team. Karlene Wiegand is a veteran of the
Carlsbad High School surf team and holds the NSSA Southwestern Women’s
College Title for the 2002 season.
The panelists will share their thoughts about surfing, their struggles,
and their triumphs.
This program will take place in the Wells Fargo Theatre at 2:00 p.m.
Admission is free for museum members, $5 for nonmembers.
