What's everybody's take on...

efrem_the_retarded_rabbit - 22 Mar 2003 03:44:08

... really non-surf bands doing surf-type originals?
The best ones I can think of at the moment are Mudhoney's "Fuzz
Gun '91" and "Fuzzbuster," and The Replacements' "Buck Hill."
I'm sure some of you can come up with some great ones. I'm all ears
on this one.

I'll have to mention 3 Canadian outfits. First, The Sadies, who seemingly
refused to commit to a single genre. Have a listen to Guns Speak at
Not strictly surf but appeals in the same way. Mmmm... reverby.
The 2nd band is Atomic 7. Currently flogging their oddly named "Gowns by
Edith Head." They have a lot of odd names actually. Actually, in a previous
band the guitarist came up with a tune called "We're Not A Fucking Surf
Band." :/ (no audio, sadly)
The 3rd is Huevos Rancheros. Some tab at:

That previous band wouldn't happen to be Shadowy Men on a Shadowy
Planet, would it? Regardless of whether or not is actually is, can
someone recommend an album of theirs to start with? (All I've heard
is "Having an Average Weekend," and I'm sure you can all guess where.)

Well, there's only 3.
IMHO, start with Savvy Show Stoppers (the one that has "Having An
Average Weekend"...you might also recognize "Zombie Compromise" from
the Taco Bell commercial), then "Sport Fishing", then end with "Dim The
Lights, Chill The Ham".

I picked up "Fresh Gasoline" by Phono-comb, which splintered off of Shadowy
Men--I enjoy it, but it gets even further from traditional surf.

those mudhoney tunes rock. jughead's revenge do some nice surf tunes
the only one i can think of off the top of my head is "swell". the
ziggens do some nice surf shit too thats all i have for bands that do
original stuff, but as far as surf covers go, jfa's and anthrax's
versions of pipeline kick ass, jfa also did a whole bunch of other
surf covers, and i also have to mention the awesome covers done by
agent orange.
keep yopur balls out of the gutter

Exactly correct, Warren. Their website is also attached to the domain I
posted for Atomic 7. I've not heard SMOASP but I _have_ heard The Man With
The Golden Card from Gowns and was sufficiently impressed that I intend to
pick up the CD. In fact, the day I heard the tune on the radio they were
playing one of my fave hangouts and I thought I'd go but it turned out to be
WAY too cold and snowy. But I'll catch them soon!

The Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet are awe-inspiring.
Get, and keep, every bit of recorded material you can find.

Go with Phil's selections. You should also check out the Shadowy Men
tribute put out by Deep Eddy Records. It is great:
