New CD - surf overload

toofastjim - 21 Mar 2003 17:46:43

I thought I would just reiterate some good things about some new, or
relatively new CDs I just got. I haven't had a chance to fully absorb most
of these yet, but they make a nice soundtrack when your watching the
incessant news coverage.
1. Hypnotic IV - Go Baby Go! - go get it. Plain & simple, this is some
great stuff. many songs from their absolutely kick ass live CD (and
mega-kick ass live show) featured here in studio form, plus a good version
of Ginza Lights. They're over in Europe rippin' these songs out right now,
and I know people must be digging it (more show reviews please!). How can
you not love a 3-pronged Mosrite assault? Its really tough to take this out
of the CD player. I can say with confidence this will certainly be one of
the best of 2003
2. For A Few Guitars More - Enrico Morricone Tribute: another one destined
for greatness - so many good tracks that I haven't had a chance to digest
yet, but as I mentioned above, its a good soundtrack to live cowboy
coverage. Initial standout tracks include The Penetrators, The Irreversible
Slacks, Dave Wronski (acoustic), The Atlantics & Pollo Del mar, but it's all
good. Real good. I hear this is starting to be scarce already, so grab it
now while you can!
3. Pollo Del Mar - Live in Japan Town - not really recorded in Japan Town,
but a brilliant (74 minutes!!) expose similar to what I heard the sea
chickens do last October @ The Utah. Great medleys including Baby Elephant
Walk/Music to Watch Girls BY/Linus & Lucy. The guitars really sound so
clean, that you would swear they were cut in a studio & had I not heard the
same sound in person last year, I would think that they were done in a
non-live environment Jeremy Rexford kicks some major arse behind the kit -
I'm surprised his name doesn't pop up more in the technical realm, as I
would certainly put him up there with Dusty and Jimmy Lester. This will
get many more spins in the very near future.
4. Phantom Creeps - s/t - another great release from the growing Necro-Tone
Records empire - this one featuring dis-members of Gein & The Graverobbers,
Big Ray & The Futuras & The Crimson Ghosts. If you like The Ghastly Ones,
The Phantom Surfers, Satan's Pilgrims, Twisted Sister or just the sound of
Mosrites and Jazzmasters with a selective smatterings of vocals a' la' The
Halloween Hootenany CD, then you'll dig this. There are only 3 people
listed on the CD, but when they played with us the other night, they did
have the essential 4-piece 2g, b, d lineup. This was also the last live
band I saw before the war started - maybe their performance unwittingly
opened up the gates of hell..who knows. I've seen multiple new copies of
this on ebay in recent days for $6, but its worth the full price. Buy it
and support the continued use of Mosrite and Fender equipment.
5. Gein & The Graverobbers - Songs in The Key of Evil - the underworld
needs more raunchy mid-fi spook surf & this disc delivers. A great followup
to their debut, but with better production, yet still retaining that raw,
wide open big Fender cabinet sound. With bands like Satan's Pilgrims & The
Ghastly Ones deceased or inactive, we need more bands like this to unearth
themselves.

I picked this up and its very good. The Penetrators really start things off
right! I also like the two Italian bands on here: Bradipos IV and
Cosmonauti. Does anyone know anything about these two bands?

I also enjoyed this. Its a lot of fun and has great packaging. Its my
favorite PDM CD.
I also heard The Hypnotic IV on Phil Dirt's show and will check their new
one out. And I'll give the others you mention a try. We need more bands in
the vein of Satan's Pilgrims and The Ghastly Ones!
