Anyone out there who knows a lot about speakers?
I have two great Altec Alnico 15" speakers. I build one into a closed
cab for the bass players bassman, and it sounds great.
Now, yesterday I've tested that cab with a Fender 75, because I want
to build the other speaker into a cab for guitar, but it did not sound
so great.
I had that very same speaker in the 75 cab (open back) and it actually
was sounding wonderful, so it sort of puzzles me.
With the closed cab, it sounded very "wooly", compressed, muffled,
whereas it was very open sounding when in the 75 cab....
To be sure, I intend to use the speaker with a twin, not the 75, but i
couldn't test that one 'cause it's currently in repair. Obviously the
twin does have more headroom then the 75 by itself.
Well, any thoughts on this? Could it be that the closed cab is slowing
the speaker down? is getting rid of the foam in the cab an option, and
if not, what's preffered... a bass-reflex opening or just an open back
speaker?
