Ground Control...Jag "hum" question.

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 03 Mar 2003 13:17:45

My Jap Jag has a pronounced "Hum" that can be cancelled one of two
ways: 1) by touching the control plate or bridge with the hand or 2)
pushing the bridge all the way forward, which for some odd reason works.
Is my guitar properly grounded? Is this just the famous Fender 60
cycle hum? My Strat has a similar buzz, but it cancels when I touch
the strings.
Just wonderin' if this was normal.

Gavin:
sounds like a loose (or broken) ground wire. Typically,
this wire connects from a tone pot (or some other element
in the pickup cicuit) to the sheilding and/or bridge. Check
out a jaguar schematic for more detail, or get that puppy
into a luthier for a quick $10 solder fix.

Hey Gavin,
That does sound like a bad ground. On my MIA jag, a wire runs from the lead
pots into the trem cavity and snakes up so that it sits between the trem
plate and the body of the guitar. I've also heard of the wire running to the
bridge posts as well on vintage Jags/JM's.
Another thing you can do to get rid of some of the normal 60 cycle hum (once
you fix the above) is to get yourself some MIA or Seymour Duncan replacement
pickups. The MIJ pickups are not reverse wound/reverse polarity like these
are. When you have both of them on, they will hum cancel much like a
humbucker. You also get that classic "both pickups on" surf sound when you
do this.
Good luck,
BN
