[Staff Writer, Mike Dugo notes: Powell St. John was an
important musician in the 1960s Austin music scene.
Because of his association with the 13th Floor
Elevators, however, his name has become virtually
synonymous with the legendary psychedelic innovators.
Although he was never a member of Roky Erickson and
Co., he did write several songs that the group
recorded. After leaving Austin for San Francisco to
follow friend and lover Janis Joplin (he was a member
of the Waller Creek Boys), St. John formed Mother
Earth, another popular rock combo that released
several LPs in the late 60s and early 70s. He was
inducted into the Texas Music Hall of fame in 2005.]
