VENTURES VENTURES VENTURES VENTURES

Unsteady Freddie (schizofredric) - 17 Mar 2006 21:45:15

what a blast tonight
gotta catch a Saturday morning 630 am flight with my daughter (college
hunting) or I'd elaborate more here
needless to say I am FUCKING OVERWHELMED
THE VENTURES - about time I saw these guys (I am ashamed to admit this is my
first time, but thank God they are still around to rock n twang as wondefully as
they did)
thought I was gonna get an interview for TWANG SHEBANG but b/c of a late start
for their sound-check (which I was privileged to sit through, and take exclusive
pix for), it all just was a rush-rush night from that point forward
no matter, I had a blast
will let others review the music the songs the playing
watching NOKIE though, from real close up, gave me quite the buzz; finger
pickin' twang at its finest
DON WILSON worked his reverb tank real hard...just amazing! especially WALK
DONT RUN '64, he really kicked it up a few notches
LEON TAYLOR on drums...bashing in Dad Mel's footsteps and surf beat...was a
powerhouse of energy...especially the encore of CARAVAN
BOB SPALDING on bass (when he wasn't changing places with Nokie) was just
marvelous; he is a true VENTURE for sure....
you know what hit me? how sad the passing of LINK WRAY is....
and ya wanna know something else?
how come all of these guys are not in that idiot Rock N Roll Hall of Fame?
RAISE YOUR HAND IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE TO YOU.....hmmm, I don't see any
hands...just what I thought
gotta pack some stuff, crash out, get up at 4 am
so...until I can check in again....if the VENTURES are playing ever again near
you (or even far away!)...RUN, DONT WALK to go see 'em
KILLER SHOW
I AM SO IMPRESSED with the playing, the warmth from the guys, their humor, the
full house crowd showing luv back at the band, and the sheer professionalism
they exude
IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS
lots of familiar surf musicians running around too....MR. ACTION & THE BOSS
GUITARS, OCEANA (9th WAVE), DAN-O and BRAIN CLAMMAGE (the CLAMS)....
I'm drained, gotta split
THE TWANG IS ALIVE AND WELL
THANKS TO THE VENTURES AND BB KINGS NYC FOR A SPECIAL EVENING

Sounds like a great show Freddie, thanks.

Brian,
Bob's been known to have problems with his back for several
years. It would be speculation on my part to state that this
is the reason he wasn't there, but I have seen him use a
special belt to hold his bass/guitar when on stage.
Was he present, and just not on the stage... anybody know?

Bob Bogle was put on doctors orders NOT to perform live with The Ventures, last
spring. This had to do with proper recuperation from some lower GI issues, so
he took a pass on the 2005 Japan tour.
According to Del Halterman, who is currently completing the authorized
Ventures biography, Bob was declared fine for touring and live performing,
several weeks ago, but decided to sit out this most recent East Coast tour. I'm
so thankful I was able to see The Ventures several times with both Nokie and
Gerry, and Mel, but mainly, the two heroes who started the whole thing back in
'58, Don Wilson and Bob Bogle.
