Anyone play baritone in a surf band?

Derek (stompa77) - 12 Mar 2006 15:26:43

Currently I'm playing bass as a stand in for a guy that broke his
hand. When he recovers he's supposed to go back to playing bass. The
band has talked about incorparating 3 guitars into the lineup since we
all get along so well.
I think it's a cool idea, but am worried that 3 guitars may be a
little too busy, or that I might get bored just following the bass
line playing single notes or doubling up a rhythym part.
Anyway, while listening to some Duane Eddie it occured to me that a
baritone guitar might be really cool. Anyone else have experience
playing baritone in a band? They seem to be making a comeback for the
nu-metal guys (since they're tuned b to b, and those guys like drop
tuning) which is cool because you can buy one for a lot less then a
vintage Fender VI or even the Dano's.

Derek,
I've used Baritones extensively on recordings, but only occasionally live.
Generally, I've tuned Baris E-E an octave below guitar, which makes it easy
to switch with guitar. As a trade-off, chords sound really muddy, so it's
really only useful as a melody instrument.
Last week I bought one of the new Jaguar Baritones. I haven't played around
with it much yet, but it's a very nice instrument. I tuned it B-B, and the
chord sound is much more guitar-like than on the E-E tuning. I think this
will be more versatile, since it can be used for rhyhtm as well as melody.
Also, as an aside, I installed a Jaguar tremolo system on the Bari, and it
works well, even with the Gibson-style bridge. It's much more like the
Fender VI I never should have sold.
This week will be the first time I use it in rehearsal - we'll see how it
goes with the full band.

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 12 Mar 2006 16:52:13

To me, Baritones are best as a melody instrument (e.g. traditionally
great for spaghetti westerns) and not as a replacement for the bass.
Baris do not produce the lower tone projection you want from a bass
instrument. The bass is primarily a rhythm instrument which may at times
lock step with the melody line, but with the drummer typically sets the
"groove".
That doesn't mean bass and baritone can't coexist. But there needs to be
some separation. I'm thinking of a tune like The Munster's Theme song to
possibly put that theory to work.
This is all just a humble opinion. Your band's expression may vary.

I've got a re-issue Dano baritone that I use with the Hellbenders.
Yeah, GREAT for a spaghetti melody. Does get muddy and overwhelming for
rhythm if you're not careful. I find myself playing smaller chords,
higher up the neck for most rhythm parts.
I've played it for a couple years now but feel like I'm still getting a
grip on using it without stepping on the bass or standard guitar and
still express the unique character of the instrument.
Love to check out the Jaguar baritone. Sounds like a winning combination.

I have no experience playing Baritone guitars live, but
I've heard Bill from the Lava Rats use a Danelectro bari-
tone that sounded AWESOME live. Hey, Bill... you out there?

Jerry Belgacom.Net (wipeoutboy63) - 13 Mar 2006 15:41:20

Hi,
Well, the Hydrosonics (the band I play in) use a RI Fender Bass IV for bass,
not really as a baritone, but it does sound different from a regular bass.
It does make the sound less deep and more interesting is some ways.
Well, we just recorded a new demo (which will be online soon) so you can
check it out at
www.thehydrosonics.be
All tunes are covers some known, some less known.
Greets,
Jerry S.

I use one for about 6 or 7 tunes during our shows. My dano Hodad is
the lead instrument on a a half a dozen of the tunes on our "Surf vs
the Flying Saucers" CD. Aside from those tunes we play "Shake That
Rat" (Los Straitjackets), and "Squad Car" (but in the key of E) with
the bari. I really like how it sounds in a trio...BIG

This is a web page I put together in about 4 minutes to help promote a
gig for the Hellbenders at the last minute. Surprisingly, it gets a
few dozen hits every month, even though I don't link to it anymore.
Rick, if you and/or Bill want to put together a page for either the
Hellbenders or The Volcanos, I'd be glad to host it. Heck, you might
wanna try out that myspace thing...!

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 14 Mar 2006 00:58:03

Hey Bob!!! Here I am!!!!
Sorry... digest mode makes things lag a bit at times.
I do indeed play baritone on 4 songs, and we've added a slow tune on
which Rodd (our bassy Rat) plays it with a guitar melody. My personal
experience is it is FANTASTIC for lead playing (especially through a
2x15 cab). Chording is tricky - certainly no open strumming kind of
stuff, but a little chunky ryhthm sounds cool with that low kick. My
personal favorite use is with tremoloed (in Fender terminology...
vibrato to the technical folk)chords on slower spy stuff. Perfect
example would be on the Blue Hawaiians' "Experiment in Terror" off of
Savage Night. It's one of those instruments that's great for sonic
variety if nothing else.
And since I'm here and pontificating, I may as well start plugging --
see me play my baritone (and maybe Mel play HIS baritone) at the next
Suurfin' Sunday - April 2nd at the Hotel Utah in SF. Meshugga Beach
Party, Pollo, and The Lava Rats. Holy crap - what a good show!!!
Sorry I've been in lurk mode a lot lately - school and baseball have
been CRAZY. That should all be changing soon enough.
See anyone in Portland,
~Bill~

Thanks, Bill! Nice to have you back among the living!
Can't wait for the Sunday Surf Extravaganza @ the Hotel
Utah. Now if we could just get you into Messhugga Beach
garb trading dual baritone leads with Mel for a few tunes,
we'd really have something!!!! Mel, ya out there???

Thanks, Brian! For the Hellbenders recent Blowout performance they linked to your page as
our "official" site. Thanks for giving us a web presence!
Bill recently started working on a Meltdowns site that will hopefully be
a template for our other bands, too.
Yeah, I want to set up some myspace pages.
