Hi. I'm new to the list and thought I should introduce myself.
My name's Chris. I've been playing guitar on and off for fifteen years
now. I'm a bit past dreams of rock'n'roll celebrity. I just play
sitting around the house for fun. I can manage to play most things and
most styles by now, although my technique isn't particularly orthodox.
I'm a pick and fingers guy, all at the same time, and whack the strings
with either edge of my strumming hand, probably because I listened to
too much Derek Bailey.
I've owned probably a dozen guitars, my current favourite being a Burns
Marquee which I got incredibly cheaply. Not the most expensive guitar I
have ever owned, but the most fun. The neck is really thick, like a
hockey stick. And it looks so good. I'm self employed and generally
work from home, so I'll be wandering around my flat and then start
staring at it, then I'll have to pick it up, and then I'll play until
my fingers hurt. Deadlines be damned.
And surf music is obviously the most fun music a guitarist can play.
The notes aren't that complicated, but the nuances are everything. I
get so excited by how physical it is, that I have to adopt a surfing
pose and move around to get it to sound just right. And the music can
be so beautiful. Sleepwalk can move me to tears.
Playing along with a surf record, feeling I am in the groove of it, is
one of the most pleasurable experiences I have ever had.

Welcome to the board , Chris.
Your description of your passion for surf music was very well worded and
deserves applause.

Yeah, lord knows we need all the people we can get.
Maybe we should start a cult and have paper hats and
sneaker endorsements and stuff. Brian could lead us.

Sounds great, but I live in Melbourne, Australia. Are you prepared to
commute?
