Hello. I am sort of new to the group. I was wondering if anyone
could help me find the tabs for Harlem Nocturne by The Ventures.
All I can find are the bass tabs. I would be great if you can
help. Thanks.
-Jack
Does anyone have tabs for the lead guitar for Harlem Nocturne? I
have searched the web and can only find Bass tabs. Thank you.

Which version? By an eerie coincidence I am listening to "Harem
Nocturne" (note spelling) by Satan's Pilgrims. Is this the same
song? It seems I've heard a zillion variations on this song; which
one is the traditional one?
Thanks,
BN
-Brian,
Harem Nocturne is not a variation of Harlem Nocturne. I can't
remember who did it for sure, but it was someone like duke ellington.
Ventures did a fast and slow version of it. I believe the
Vi-Counts or Vis-counts did the original band version of it.

The song was originally composed by Earle Hagen. The version I am
looking for is the one recorded by The Ventures. There are a lot of
versions out there, but all I can find are bass guitar versions of
the Venture's recording.... any help would be appreciated. Duke
Ellington did do a version, so did the Vis-Counts. Hagen's lead was
written for the Sax.... but I know there are guitar lead versions out
there. I had listened to a hometown band play what they called "The
nastiest song in the world without words," and that song was Harlem
Nocturne. The riffs were out of this world. If I had a copy of the
recording, I could probably tab it but unfortunately I do not.

The Ventures' fast version of Harlem Nocturne is on "In the Vaults" (volume 1 on
the Ace label U.K.)
The Ventures' slow version is on the album titled "The Ventures". It is there
second album.

Gotcha....I'll keep my eye open for it. What album/CD is the Venture's

Heya,
Yeah there are tons of versions of this Earl Hagen classic. A couple
of choice ones are the King Curtis version --a small combo with
Curtis' killer sax, Lounge Lizards -- loose and scrappy and a neat
small band version by Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet which of
course they named something else (which unfortunately doesn't come to
mind. Also worth listening to is the Spike Jones big band version
which is available in an UltraLounge collection. The Ventures version
your talking about is around (you might be able to find it on e-music)
but frankly didin't knock me out. The best thing I can say about it is
that its guitar friendly--in the people's key of E.
good luck!
LC
Ron,
Thanks for the Info, I'll have to track down those originals.
I have a Friend Jim Frias(one of the 2 original Sax Players
for the Nocturnes. They use to play it also(hence their name)
but didn't record it unfortunately. About a year ago He and Marty
Tippens(from the Fabulous Planktones-and poster on this board)
Adrien(drummer from CHUM) and I (on bass) played it and a few other
songs at a birthday party. It is really a cool swinging bass part,
but I know you don't need to know about that. And yeah it is a
sweet and nasty song.
Maybe Marty can help ya out. I suggest goin' out and findin'
some of the 60's versions of it, you won't be dissaponted.
enjoy

Their version is "Harlem by the Sea," on Savvy Show Stoppers, if
memory serves.

Theres a live in japan version by Martin Denny, and
the rendition by Mantovani is probably the best track
he did.
