Surfers' lingo (was something else I can't remember)

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 28 Feb 2006 21:56:56

Here's some useful definitions from the Riptionary, a Dictionary of Surf Terms.
(And a few I
added). BTW, I have never heard a surfer under 50 use the word 'hodad'.
Barney
Someone who is less than skilled at surfing. Originally derived from the cartoon
character
Barney on The Flinstones because he was similar to a hodad. (Contemp. Bozo, Val,
Valley
Boy).
Betty
Female surfer, probably so-named after Barney's wife.
Brodad
Surfer or Hodad wanna-be surfer who overuses Bro or Brah.
Hodad
A beginner or non-surfer. One that has yet to master the art of surfing. Most
surfers are
hodad's to some degree.
Hodaddy
Someone who doesn't surf or is posing as a surfer to be part of a crew at the
beach. Much
like a poser, it's someone that surfers prefer not to associate with and tend to
avoid once
identified.
Kook
An unskilled surfer.
Land Shark
A poser, hodad, kook, someone who doesn't surf, but when asked insists they do.
Pro Bro
A competitive surfer, usually one with lots of corporate sponsors.
Sewer Surfer
A hodad or hodaddy who cruises around on Friday and Saturday nights with his
board on
top of his car to try to impress the chicks.
Taco Stand
Any place devoid of action; is boring, or loaded with kooks and hodads. Example:
"Let's
blow this Taco Stand."

Paul Johnson once clarified the term Hodad on Cowabunga, I believe.
A Hodad was not a surfer, but was instead the black leather jacket
wearing guy who was really into cars and rockabilly. They hung out at
the beach for the ladies but did not surf themselves.
Surfers vs Hodads....Mods vs Rockers...etc.

Did the hodads play a shoreline gold stratocaster and
invent the reverberator and the JBL-speakered fender amp
too?

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 01 Mar 2006 16:53:09

I think, like all in-group youth idioms, surfer lingo changes with the season
and age of the
participants. I recall ''Betty,' and "Barney" and especially "Bozo" from the
1970s; "gremmie"
seems to have morphed into "grom," "val" was common, too, when I lived in
LaJolla circa
1978. "Kook" never seems to go out of fashion, tho.
But I never heard Hodad, Hodaddy, or Land Shark. "Poser" was common, and still
is today.
We used to call good things "tubular," another by-gone word.
I always loved surfer language, it is typically playful and goofy. But it feels
weird dipping
back into the 60s and dredging up the old terminology, like saying "Hepcat" or
"Daddio"
among jazz players.
However, if y'all want to be Barneys and use these words, I say, "rad, Hodad!"

Carol,
I think the surfer's would call you "Betty's Mom." They respect mother hood, so
long as the
mom is cool. And any mom who has a Fender guitar and plays is, well, cool.

(plus i should own stock in fender) :) i've only achieved
'cool' status with my sons' 13 to 15 year old friends, but that's good
enough for me...........c
