Hello Everyone,
I started the www.surfguitar101.com website almost 2 years ago. We had
just gotten back from California, bursting with photos and video clips
of the Surf Coasters, Pollo Del Mar, The Sub-Mersians, & The Hypnotic
IV. We wanted to share these with the world, and I always wanted to
tinker with a website. So I got some hosting and learned a bunch of
stuff along the way.
The one thing that has been kind of missing from the site has been
interactiviy. Right now, it's basically one-way communication. I put
up videos and photos. So, in the last 2 days, I've been playing with
some "portal creation" software (PHP-Nuke), and have fallen totally in
love with it. Have you guys ever seen Slashdot? Or to some extent,
Harmony Central?
We will be able to create a database of gear reviews, show reports, CD
reviews, etc. And it won't just be me. It will be you guys
contributing content.
Plus, and I know this will make a few of you happy, it has built in
web-based forum software. I also see that chat software is available,
so maybe we can finally ditch the notoriously crappy Yahoo chat someday.
So, I've got big plans, and we'll see if they pan out. I have some
concern about my web hosting provider being able to handle the load.
But we can only try and see what happens.
How do you get started? Well go to and
sign up (create an account). If you have anything that you have posted
here like a review or report, submit it to me as a story or review,
and we will start building content.
I will need help on a lot of things (notably some cool graphics for
the topic icons). Please post any comments and suggestions here to
this list until I get the forums up.
Off the top of my head, I would like to take some of Ivan's CD reviews
and use them as trial content. And Bruce D, you had some great gear
reviews, can I use them?
I will be making a to-do list on the site that shows what I have in
the works. I have already loaded the 117 links I had on the old site
into the database. That software rocks.
Thank you!
BN
Way to go, Brian! I especially look forward to the web-based forum.

I was wondering why I couldn't get on the site last night. Awesome
news. I think a chat function (irc) forum, and gear review would be
great. . .not to mention immensely helpfull. Good luck!

BRIAN:
best of luck sith this
totally wicked cool what you are doing, and where you are going with
the site
I am sure the people in this Group will give you terrific ideas and
suggestions, and help you make it grow
keep up the fantastic effort(s)!

Brian,
excellent! I just checked it out in looks really cool. For this moment,
I have one question and one suggestion ...
- question: I'm not sure how this relates to the yahoo-group? Is the
yahoo group going to bleed to death, is it supposed to? Not that I mind
if we all jump to sg101.com, or if we stay here. just wondering how the
two relate. (all the technical mumbo jumbo about forum formats and
software applications doesn't mean anything to me, I have a fairly push-
button-get-banana approach to all things internet)
- suggestion: If bandwith is going to be problem in the future, esp.
with a video and mp3 database, you might at one point want to consider
a system of contributing members of some sort, like I've seen the
Fender Forum uses. (not that you'd grow as big as the FDP ;-) ... I'm
sure I'm not the only one who'd happily pinch in for the hosting costs
(and still leave you 100% in charge :-) )

Well I don't know. Ultimately you guys will say. I am just providing
both right now. We had a long and interesting debate about Yahoo Group
versus web-forums a while ago. It seems to be one of those hot-button
religious issues like Coke vs Pepsi, Vi vs Emacs, Fender vs Gibson,
etc. LOL. I'm open to both, and both will coexist until there is a
clear winner or I loose interest. But I would suggest that you all
give the web forums a try. I have used them extensively in the past
few months for some of my other hobbies, and have grown to like them.
It is possible, now, with RSS, to be able to see when forum topics
have been updated, and you can get email reminders when forum topics
have replies, but I agree, there is nothing like just getting posts
emailed to you. There are plusses and minuses to both. Just give the
web forum a chance is all I ask. If you are one of those people who
only view the Yahoo Groups via the web interface, then the forums will
probably be much, much better. But it's all personal taste and what
you are used to.

Yes, I am already thinking about adding a donations button. If I add
those videos back, my bandwidth shoots through the roof....I'll think
about it.
Thanks for your thoughts Wannes. Please keep them coming everyone.
BTW, the forums are now open. :-)
I desparately need cool little icons for the topics on the site. I
will try to scratch something together, or copy someone else, but if
any of you are good with art, please let me know. I just need
icons/photos to represent the major topics: Site news (maybe a
newspaper icon?), Gear (maybe a reverb tank?), Show Announcements
(maybe a small flyer icon?), Show Reports, Music Reviews, etc, etc.
And try to keep them somehow surf related. Please contact me if
interested....I'm hoping this will turn into a community effort,
because I don't have time to do everything.
Thanks,
BN
Here is a primer on how the new SG101 site works for those of you
who have never used one of these types of sites before.
Say you write up a CD revew, show report, or your band would like to
announce a gig. So you write something up, and then log into the
SG101 site. You then hit the Submit News link and fill out the form.
Your submission will be sent to the crack staff at SG101 for review
where it will be categorized into a topic area. If your item is
accepted, it gets published as a headline story on the front page
for all to view. Other members can then leave comments (and so can
you!) and a long discussion thread can follow, tacked right onto the
end of the article. Viewers can also rate the article. Your item
also becomes a permanent part of the site. Visitors can click on the
archived news link and be shown all prior stories. And/or use the
search feature.
These news stories (I think - haven't figured it out yet) can be RSS
feeds, so you can see when new stories have been added from your
browser or RSS news reader.
The site also has a web forum which is very similiar to the list we
have here, but it's all graphical and filled with smilies. So unlunf
can stop using <g> and actually insert an icon of a smiley face. <g>
Give it a whirl. I hope to submit some real stories from the
archives here as a trial ballon in the next day or too.
Thanks,
BN

Brian,
Good move! Your hard work will pay off. Alot of people may give you some
flack about switching over, but grouplists are so...1995.
A php forum has all the advantages, and a grouplist has all the
disadvantages. Soon people will see how easy archiving and organinzing threads
will be. Ever try to search for an archived message on a grouplist that you
kinda remembered? good luck!
hey the module type site looks good already. great work!
