Ok, so I just found out about Mosrite guitars the other day, and I see
that a lot of you guys like them. I want to get into playing surf and
I don't yet have the right equipment for the surf sound. I like the
Jazzmasters and Jags, but now I really want a Mosrite after seeing
some vids of The Nebulas and Satan's Pilgrims. I love rare and/or
strange guitars and just love the look and the sound of the Mosrite. I
just have to have one now. But, I'm anal about quality. I never settle
for anything, never have, I always save up to buy exactly what I want.
And now I want a Mosrite. But, man they are hard to get ahold of, and
bying a guitar by mailorder scares the hell out of me. I need to feel
it, and play it.
Where can I find original Mosrites today? I've looked at all the
copy's out there and don't mind a copy. But the only one's I like are
the Mark I with the zero fret and Vibramute. The Fillmore Mosrites
look really good, and I've heard great things about them and also the
Zamminc "Excellent" Mosrites. Can anyone tell me the difference
between the two? are the "Excellent" Mosrites made by Fillmore? I want
a Mosrite of high quality, preferably the more "legal" Fillmore Mark I
model. I don't really like the Wilson Bros models, or the Tym, or the
Acoustic, or the hi flyer, and no way in hell am I going to deal with
Ed Roman.
Is there anywhere else I can get a Fillmore Mosrite except in Japan,
here in the states that you know of?
I'm just starting out with surf, and it seems that a new re-issue
Jazzmaster is almost the same price as an original Mosrite and the
Fillmore Mosrite. And with the Jazzmaster I still need a buzz stop and
the Duncan Vintage Pups... Should I just forget about a Mosrite? What
should I do? And as for fender Amps, which do you think I should start
with? New or used? What should I look for? Money is a factor (I'm not
rich at all). Please help if you can, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

AceHaze, I am one of probably many Mosrite fans
that may be able to steer you in the right direction.
Back in 2002 I saw the Filmoore 50th Anniversary model
with a sparkle blue finish & HAD to have it. It was
on the Ed Romans Guitars website. Ed Roman runs a
guitar shop out of Las Vegas.
After doing a little research & conversing with
Mr. Roman over the phone, I had my Mosrite a week & a
half later. I'm a big surf guitar & Ramones fan, so
what other guitar would be worth blowing a months
salary on???
I'm not in a band, nor am I the greatest player,
but I do know a beautiful guitar when I see one.
Aside from asthetics, it plays wonderfully! The
action is TIGHT from the first fret to the 21st.
I actually got to go to Vegas last year & dropped
by Mr. Romans shop. He has a huge showroom with
dozens of Mosrites. It was all I could do to walk out
of there without purchasing another. Go to the
website & take a look at Ed's Mosrite page.
Hope this helped: Big E

The last time I was in Ithaca, NY Rumble Seat Music had a bunch of Mosrites.
I'm not sure if they were new or old (too expensive for me to even
startconsider!) I think they have more instruments than are listed on
their web page. It might be worth e-mailing them to ask.

I heard that Fillmore Mosrite is no longer happening. I'm sure there's plenty
still for sale. I have new and old Mosrites (sorry, none fer sale) and I can
say that the new Japanese ones, Fillmore and Excellent, are better than the
originals in terms of set up and construction. I don't like the Mosrite for
playability. The neck is too thin. The frets are too low. My hands are too big
for it. I love the Mosrite for it's backwards looks and classic sound.

Just reminiscing.. I remember being in highschool around 1964 when the
original Ventures Model came out.... $399 new. Too much money back then
for a 16 year old :-)
ed roman charges an awful lot for his mosrites. and for a college student like
me, too
much. if you do some research and see how much the fillmore mosrites go for in
japan,
it's often a 700 dollar plus markup over here. a few years ago, you could get
koichi at the
ishibashi webshop to ship them over here for a mighty fine price. but, that is
no longer the
case, and they now cost 1800 dollars.
the lower-end excellent 65 that zamminc sells goes for about the equivalent of
900
dollars on some japanese webshops. in standard colors like black, white,
sunburst, and
the white pearl costing about 100 more. he also is now selling a 'super
excellent 65' with a
better tailpeice and some great colors. but it's still cheaper than going
through ed roman.
I just received a '65 Fillmore Mosrite from Ed Roman. Not counting
the case or shipping, it cost me $2188 and is superior to the
Fillmore MkI I purchased from him last year for $1395.
j-guitar.com in Japan is selling the same guitar for 189,000 Yen
($1,622.87 USD), as is mcci.or.jp. guitarman.fr is selling them for
3300 Euros (4,029.38 USD). Based on the quality of the guitar, I
believe I paid a fair price.
Now a question to you Mosrite owners here: my guitar came with a 10-
46 string set. Is this the best gauge for the MkI model? Would you
advise a lighter gauge? What brands of strings would you recommend
for this guitar?

Hey Bernie,
I prefer 13's on my Fenders for surf but for the Mosrite, stick with the 10's.
Its what the Ventures used to create the classic Mosrite sound and you'll have
to mess with vibrato springs if you even go to 11's. In what ways is the new
Fillmore an improvement over your earlier Fillmore?

Hi Marty,
Thanks for the tip. I put a new set of Blue Steel 10's on today and
spent a few hours playing through a new Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp.
Very nice sound, but I'm not sure about the Blue Steels yet. I'll
have to try a few other brands before I settle on one.
The new Fillmore feels sturdier than my other Fillmore. It's heavier
and has a nicer finish. The pickups seem to be a little larger and
more rounded on the edges with larger screws. The bridge has a
better height adjustment and the tailpiece doesn't have the cutout
with the wood showing through. It's still a rough metal though. The
fretboard is a very dark wood instead of the reddish wood my other
Fillmore has. Maybe ebony as opposed to rosewood? I don't know. The
neck seems slightly thinner, which is no problem for my skinny
fingers. The knobs are different too. They have 3 horizontal grooves
running around the circumference. The strap lug near the neck is
angled more towards the neck for a more secure strap attachment.

Thanks for the details, Bernie,
Heavier is a big minus in my book but the darker fretboard and other things you
mention sound good. Those knobs on the new one are called "spun" knobs.

Marty, the new Fillmore is only a little heavier than my Les Paul
Studio; the older Fillmore is lighter. Spun knobs? Were there spun
knobs on the original 65's? I don't remember. They do look familiar.

I'm a fan of lighter weight guitars. I think the spun knobs were used from '63
through early '65.

Marty, the new Fillmore is only a little heavier than my Les Paul
Studio; the older Fillmore is lighter. Spun knobs? Were there spun
knobs on the original 65's? I don't remember. They do look familiar.

I got my 50th anniversary sparkle blue model
from Mr. Roman 3 years ago for $2,200. A super nice
guy to do biz with! I've seen them cheaper just like
others have said, but after a little research I made
up my mind he was who I felt safest with plunking down
that kinda dough with. I would be a nervous wreck if
I bought something from overseas & waited & waited &
waited for it to hit my doorstep. One week later via
UPS I got my axe & couldn't be happier. Just go with
what you feel best with. MOSRITE is worth the effort!

Yeah, I recently sold a slightly weird Mosrite Ventures bass that had a '64
serial number but a lot of parts from '65 (including the volume and tone
pots) on it.
It had those "spun" knobs.
