Anybody see when these are being released? I ordered both the Richie

This is great news! I actually have all that stuff on CD already, so
I'll have to think about whether I want it again. However, I should
point out that the Hondells' Surf Route 101 is chock full of Podolor
instrumentals (about half the album), as well, and some really good
ones. The original version of Midnight Run is on this CD, for
example. Oh, and that's actually Podolor sitting in the back seat of
the car on the front cover! The only known photo of him? The other
two Hondells albums only have a couple instros, and only one of those
albums has Podolor on it. But Surf Route 101 is a must have!

It's really nice to see that Sundazed continues reissue surf music. It
should mean that it sells reasonably well as they wouldn't do it
otherwise. Hopefully also current surf bands will pick up the challenge
and improve the situation further.

Matt,
Oh, I did that alright, and now my wallet looks like
it lost a fight with a mugger! <g>
There is also a new Link Wray CD, under 'New Releases',
called "Law of the Jungle: The Swan Demos '64" (about
a third of the way down the page). I hadn't known
about that one either, so off to Sundazed goes another
half a tank of gas (just like Bill's lunch money <g>).

I also already have all of it on either CD or vinyl but think it's a
great initiative from Sundazed. Hopefully more cool reissues from the
Capitol vaults will follow. Anyone heard any news about the Ghouls
album reissue? I think it was said that it was going to be released
by Capitol themselves but wouldn't it make much more sence that
Sundazed did it?
As for Richie Podolor, I personally prefer the instro work he did
with studio groups like the Hondells and Super Stocks over the stuff
he put out under the Richie Allen name. I just find the earlier Allen
stuff a bit boring both sound wise and song wise.
BTW Ivan, it's the Super Stocks that are being reissued, not the
Hondells ;-D

According to a post on the Gary Usher Yahoo group, this is just the
first batch. Sundazed will be following this up with reissues of the
Ghouls, Kickstands, Knights, Mr. Gasser & the Weirdos, and a comp of
rare Gary Usher related stuff.

Klas, I'm with you. I like Podolor's work with the Hondells and Super
Stocks more than I do the "Richie Allen" stuff. But, I still do like
that stuff as well. I got Surfer's Slide on Soulseek a few months
back and it left me in the same state you described.
I thought the Davie Allen stuff last summer was about as good as
Sundazed was going to get... It looks like I may just have to cut
lunch out of my life for awhile.

For the most part, these releases will be the first time
from studio masters for much of this material. Earlier
issues mostly used album masters or safety copies
(generations down from studio tapes), and in some cases,
vinyl. The audio should be vastly improved, especially
given Bob Irwin's exceptional talent at remastering sixties
material. Ya-hoo!

That's interesting because Capitol had actually scheduled
and announced some of these - maybe they licensed the
porjects to Sundazed.

That's great to hear! However I find it a bit strange that they are
already reissuing the Knights and the Kickstands as those bands had a
legal 1996 CD reissue on the American avi label. As for a Mr. Gasser
& the Weirdos upcoming reissue, I recently won the now out of print 2
CD set of their 3 great albums for a hefty $75 on eBay. Ouch!!

Bill, that's how I see it too. The Richie Allen stuff is good whereas
I think much of his Gary Usher related stuff is great. The recent
Davie Allan releases on Sundazed are tops as are their "Lost Legends
Of Surf Guitar" series that we hopefully will see more volumes of in
the future.

That would be really great to see come out. Though, there was a
German (?) company that released all the Ghouls tracks as part of
their complete Gary Usher series. But it's not quite the same.

Really? I agree it doesn't have the fire of many surf instros, but
songs like The Quiet Surf, Rising Surf, Surfer's Slide are
classics. On occasion some of the songs do sound kinda 'canned',
pure studio productions. I think Allen/Podolor stuff is in general
very spotty - on every release some of it is brilliant, and some
pretty bland and boring...
> BTW Ivan, it's the Super Stocks that are being reissued, not the

Oops. Well, as you know, same thing! But thanks for that
correction. I still think that Surf Route 101 by the Super Stocks
is the best of the entire batch. (BTW, Thunder Road doesn't have
Allen/Podolor, but School Is A Drag does).

I had asked the people doing the Ghouls myspace when they first
started and was told it was Capitol records behind it(the myspace)
and it would be Capitol releasing that album. Now anyone could have
been behind that pulling my leg, but they also said something about
the early Dick Dale albums. I'm hoping one day those show up on
Sundazed roster as well.

always on the lookout for 1st wave stuff, of which I have way less then
the new stuff, i watched this thread with enthusiasm any more insights
in in what to get FIRST would be welcome. (I ve been skipping lunches
since '98 to fund other habits, so I'll have to take it slow) - I think
I only have some podolor stuff on comp - too tired too check now but I
saw some very famliar titles.
btw some of the stuff on the discount page looks intersting too - also
cheap vinyl there.

I have a lot of that Podolor stuff too, but damn...gonna have to break
out the wallet again. I still don't have any of those Lost Legends of
Surf Guitar CD's either....<hangs head in shame>
I tend to agree with some of you...some of that stuff released as
Ritchie Allen is a bit dull...you have to wonder how quickly he
pounded some of that stuff out. But some of the songs are quite brilliant.
I wonder if he has any clue there are still surf fans like us who
really dig that stuff?
