Re: the Wet Tones: holy moly!// Varatones( new cd) anybody else reviews??

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 15 Feb 2006 20:51:45

That's been one of my to get cd's on my waiting list.
I really liked the few songs that I've heard Clint Play, and the
sound clips of the songs on the Zptduda site.
Great stuff, Bruno.
I got to hear the new Varatones -I bleive it's called "Headin' Out"
I haven;t picked it up yet, but My Buddy Baja Marty put it on, as we
drove up to Santa Barbara for Paul Johnsons b-day party last Sat.
I have to say the first few songs recordings are extra bright, and
very modern sounding( way too much cymbals), then after a few songs,
the recording sound changes, to a more normal mid fi sound.
I think that for the most part the sound is still there with their
supper drippy guitars. But alot of the songs left me kinda wanting
a bit more strucure or changes. I don't know what I'm trying to say.
But it didn't hit me the same way the first cd did.
I'll probably still get it, but It may be a bit down on the list now.
anybody else have anything to say about this, or am I crazy??

Headin' Out will probably grow on you the more you listen to it.
That's the way I was with "Jetty..." The guitar playing is killer on
both albums but the recording quality leaves a bit to be desired. The
drummer in me has to say that they could use a different drummer. His
style fits for certain songs. He just tends to play the same basic
feel on most songs, and it doesn't always mesh right. That being
said, I'd still recommend picking it up. Aside from a few ho-hum
tunes, it's an excellent cd.

Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.
