I was at a record store staff party the other night, and they had stacks of CDs
for the taking. I
was stoked when I came across Mel Waldorf's "Meshugga Beach Party" in the bin. I
immediately snared two copies, gave one to my surf drummer friend Jerry, and
popped the
other into my car CD player.
What fun! Thanks, Mel, this is a great CD. Such tone! Really, some of the best
trad surf
sounds I have ever heard. It's got me thinking about other traditional folk
music that can be
played surf-style.
And of course, it was cool to get a copy for free. Hope the record store paid
for those!
Gavin
Gavin,
Congrats on the score, and glad you like the CD! Do the CDs have holes
punched through the bar codes? It's funny, I saw about half a dozen store
promo copies of the CD on Half.com and ebay the day before the official
release.
Actually, I knew I had really "made it" as an artist when Dave Arnson told
me he scored a Mel-tones CD in a used bin a few years back. I made it to
the secondary market - YES!
As for traditional music that could be played surf style, I think that most
mediterranean and eastern european folk music share the spanish style scale,
which makes for easy conversion. Indian music could be a cool mix too; dig
that twangy sitar.
