hey all,
this goes back to the blues deville thread a while back. I have played
through a deville for a while and have been quite pleased with it, it's the
2-12" version with the spring reverb tank
but.....
over the weekend I tried out a deluxe reverb, and OH MY GOD what a
difference...!
the tone that came out of the this was amazing compared with the deville.
with the deville I had to use an EQ, a compressor, a tremolo, and an
overdrive pedal just to tame the monster to my liking
but with my new deluxe reverb I just plug right in with no pedals and it
just sounds amazing, full and true.
now I use the volume on my guitar to dial in the proper amount of overdrive
(if I need it) and the amp responds very nicely. it's like the amp
itself is an instrument...
until now I never really realized how important a good amp is. but it
really does make a huge difference. I think if I had it all to do over
again, I would definitely pay more attention to the quality of the amp.
anyway, this was my little equipment lesson for the week, just thought I'd
pass it along
james
btw, I tried out the vibrolux as well - sound was amazing, the trem was
buttery, but I thought the reverb wasn't as 'wet' as the deluxe. with the
vibrolux I had to crank the reverb to 10 to get the proper moisture, but
with the deluxe I can ride it around 7 without it all getting totally lost
if you know what I mean, and still have some reverb to spare. also, in
case your wondering the deluxe reverb I bought doesn't have the stock gt
tubes in it, I think they are EH tubes, and the speaker has been swapped
out for a jensen. I'm also play an american deluxe strat through it.
The Blues Deville thread was mine from a while back
when I was looking at one in a local shop. I passed
it up and it's gone now. I'm getting my tax return
soon, but I really can't afford to dump all $1000+ of
it on an amp. I played a Twin Reverb in a store and
liked it a whole lot, but the guy was kind of giving
me the evil eye (go figure) so I didn't get to screw
around with it too much. Anybody got recommendations
for anything under, say, $500?
Oh yeah, and I got my Cyclone II last Friday! I'll be
posting a review of this thing soon, it's pretty
sweet.

for what it's worth, i would (uhh, i did) spend the little money I had on a
75 and/or a cheap (ie late 70's silverface) twin. If you have little money,
as I do, these are both very acceptable.
I'd go for the twin if that's what you can afford.
thea alternative, to give an idea, I had the 75 equiped with an Alnico Altec
speaker, and it was pretty good surf sound for the money. I've seen 75's go
for around $300, and JBL dick dale speakers for $150. both on ebay in
Europe, should be less in the States.
the Altec is now in closed cab to go with the twin though, which is another
step up up. This and the reverb unit are my last upgrades for a while:
my sweet girl and I are expecting our first, and we're getting married in
april, so guess where my tax refund is going... I'll be 50+ when the little
one will go off and live on its own, I'll start saving for a showman then
;-)

Richard,
If you're looking to save a little green, my recommendation for one
of the best amps out there right now, as far as value is concerned,
is the Hot Rod Deluxe. It's got the single 12" speaker, beautiful
wet reverb, even two separate drive channels (for those of us who
are into that kind of thing). It's not back-breaking heavy for
being a tube amp, and it's not terribly huge (24" wide, 17" tall,
10" deep). But perhaps the biggest selling point is that this amp
CRANKS!
They're running right in the neighborhood of $575 or so. Yeah, it's
a hair above your quoted price range, but I think they're really
worth the cost.
