Strings

supertwangreverb - 07 Jun 2004 00:42:34

I've got a question for the older guys in the group. Back in the 60s
did you use wound G strings or substitute a plain steel B for a G.
I've been listening to some Fender 4 closely and it sounds like Randy
Holden was either using a plain G or he was jsut bending the hell out
of a round one. Unfortunaly most pictures from the early 60s are of
poor quality so its hard to tell by looking.
Any information is appreciated.

Back in the 60's I either bought a set of medium round wounds
and "moved them over" - used the A for the low E, etc, and then use a
lighter high E (a 5 string banjo 5th string worked well) - or I think
I usually used Gretsch Chet Atkins "Rhythm n' Blues" strings, which
came with an unwound G.

I did read somewhere that Randy and the Fender 4 tuned down to D.
I don't know if that meant all the strings were tuned down a whole
step or just the low E. But I would assume if he was tunnig Down.
He probably was usuing some hefty sized strings.
