What gauge and brand of strings do you guys use? I'm
going to start trying some new stuff out, just wanted
an idea of where to start. I've been using Ernie Ball
strings.

Kirill Turitsin - 18 Feb 2003 06:27:40

Hello, I'm new on the list - my name is Kirill, I'm from Russian instro band
SPOILERS -
I think main thing for playing surf is gauge - I use strings 11 or 12 by
Rotosound, Dean Markley, D'Addario etc.

Hey Richard!
I've got flatwound .11's on my AV Jag - I use D'Addario Chromes. Gonna move
up to .12s on my next string change, though. To my ears, the Chromes sound
pretty good, and they're reasonably priced.

At the moment, I am using good ol' Ernie Ball Slinky 10s on my MIJ
Jag. I actually used 9s for a looooong time, but since moving up to
10s, I couldn't be happier, and am actually thinking of hopping right
on up to 11s soon.
Dick -- what do you think of the chromes?? Those are the ones in the
black packages, right? Aren't they tape-wound too? I thought I'd
read that the last time I checked out a pack at my shop. Esp now
with your recommendation, I will have to pick up a set and check them
out.

I've got D'Addrio Chromes (12's) on my Jaguar and Strat. Its almost
too much for me on the Strat...very stiff, but they are perfect on
the Jaguar. Must be the scale length. The strings are flatwound, and
seem to last a long time. They are also pretty cheap compared to
some other flatwounds.

Hey Bill!
I really like the Chromes - they feel great, and sound even better (hmmm . .
. almost sounds like a beer commercial)! They are the ones in the black
package - the label describes them as "High Finish Ribbon Wound Jazz Light
Gauge" (.011, .015, .022, .030, .040, .050). As you know, on a Jag they'll
feel like 10s due to the short-scale. I think that Brian Neal also uses
Chromes - am I remembering correctly, Brian? He may have some thoughts on
these, too. I really like 'em -

I use blues steels.
52, 42, 32 wound
18, 15, 13 unwound.
Not a standard set, I just ordered a dozen of each size, planning ahead
I guess. I picked the sizes, so that they are all just about the same
tightness; i.e. bending them sideways took what seemed to be about the
same force.

Hi Kirill,
It's a pleasure to see you on this list! I have the Spoilers' "Europe" on
the "Twangin' Around The World" compilation, put out on Jori Venemies
excellent Twangsville Productions label (I was lucky enough to be asked to
write a liner note for the CD). It's a great song! It's an original, isn't
it? There are sure a lot of good Russian rockabilly bands that I know of,
like Crazy Men Crazy, Mad Heads, Barbulators and Mister Twister, but the
Spoilers is the only Russian surf band that I know of. Very cool! Are you
planning on recording a surf album in the near future? Are there any other
Russian surf/instro bands that I should check out?
As for strings, 11 or 12 is indeed the preferred guage for surf, but, for
some reason, 10s just seem to feel better to me. I use Fender, pure nickel
wound, Original 150 (.010-.046). I like the sound of pure nickel wound. I
think that Eddie Angel uses these. That said, I'm tempted to try some flat
wound strings. If I do that, I'll bump the guage up to 11.

Tom,
My daughter used to listen to your radio program when she lived in
Oberlin. She said it was ulta cool. She lived there from 1991 to 2002.
Also--it hasn't been mentioned, but, I personally, prefer
Thomastik-Insfeld flats. There's actually two kinds of them. the Swing
series is nickel, I like 11-50 sets. They also have a type called
Plectrum, that I keep on my Rickenbacker, which is a bronze flatwould
with a wound 6th string. You would not think bronze strings would
sound good with wound pickups--but they do. This combination sounds
more like a natural acoustic guitar than the acoustic guitars with
piezos I have tried. This makes for a more natural rhythm guitar sound.
I also wanted to mention Pyramid and Maxima flats. All the strings I
mention are more expensive per set--but, you get much longer life out
of the strings--so in terms of value, there is no comparison. I also
like TI flats on my bass--in my opinion, they are the best.
Once I had a problem with a couple of sets of Plectrum strings on
Sperzel tuners--I wrote the company, and they sent me several
replacement sets, and asked If I would mind sending the defective
string for analysis--they really stand behind their products.

I know this is primarily a guitar string thread, but I just want to jump in
with my $.02. I also use TI Jazz Flats on both my 62 Jazz Reissue and my 51
P-bass reissue exclusively. I tried others but I keep going back to the
TI's. As far as life goes, I've had the them on my Jazz since June and they
keep getting better.

Actually Phil, I'm planning on doing some
experimenting with bass strings soon too. I plan on
getting some TI flats to try on my 62 reissue P bass
and I've also got a set of GHS Boomers that I'm going
to try. I was just wondering, Fender bass' come stock
with a light/medium gauge set .45 through .100, but
the GHS set that I got is .45 through .105. Is this
going to make a noticeable difference? I won't have
to adjust the truss rod or anything will I? If it's
going to entail anything, I'd just as soon sell the
GHS's or exchange them for the gauges matching what's
on there now.

For all the bass-heads around the group, I also wanted to mention
that La Bella makes a great set of tapewound bass strings. They're
the black flatwound, much like those Pete Curry is presently using
with LS. As far as my awareness goes, I think Fender (is it?) also
makes them.
While price is a hangup for many people on these, you can order them
off of Carvin's website (www.carvin.com) for 18.99. Considering
they go for over 40 most anywhere else, it's a deal that's hard to
beat.

You shouldn't need a truss rod adjustment with that small of an increase
increase in size. I did find out that there might be problems if you don't
notch the nut when going bigger. I had one of the new 51 P reissues' nut
snap and was told that was caused by going to a larger size string without
making the nut slot bigger. I just think it was a weak nut...

For $19 I'll try them. I currently have not found TI's for less than $35 a

Ohsyrus,
You just made my day by telling me that your daughter listened to my show.
Small world. I moved to Oberlin in Jan. of '91. By the way, I'm going to
play "Europe," by the Spoilers, tomorrow on my show. Also, subject related,
I'm determined to try some flatwound 11s. I'm thinking either the
Thomastik-Insfeld nickel or the D'Addario Chromes.
Thanks!

Tom,
You probably know who she was, cause she worked in the video store
next to the Fev for years. I went out there to visit her a couple of
years ago when the Mermen came to Cleveland and we went and saw the
show together. But she moved to Vermont last summer. She used to call
me up when your show was on and hold the phone next to her radio--"See
Dad, Surf music," she would say. "Hey, that's the Tsunami Soul Guy", I
would say. Cool.

Kirill Turitsin - 20 Feb 2003 01:28:18

Hi, Tom!
Thanx for nice words.
Well, no, we're not planning to record whole album in the near future.
But we'll record few songs pretty soon.
We'll record "Europe" again (btw, yes it's our own song), coz we don't like
old record, plus 2 more our own songs and 2 cover -
"Fir tree was born in the forest" - it's traditional Russian X-mass song
we'll do it for X-mass compilation of El Toro records
& one song for tribute to Frankie Stein & His Ghouls.
About other Russian instro bands - here was nice band Mars Attacks! they
don't exist now, now we have Propellers, who play rockabilly, but they have
also instro program, next Bombers, who play psychobilly/surf.

Jaguar Jap reissue, Fender flatwound 11s. Very happy with the tone,
and no more "sliding" sound as I move positions on the neck. I hope to
try some other flatwounds (GHS Brites), but overall, am very happy
with these strings.

One disadvantage of digest mode is constantly being behind, especially when
I go for a few days without checking my mail here at home! Anyway, John, I
was at that Mermen show in Cleveland! It was great seeing Jim Thomas and
Shig Komiyama. I couldn't believe that I was seeing the Mermen in Cleveland,
where surf shows are generally few and far between. The effects and
tapeloops or whatever JT was using were quite overwhelming, but I really
enjoyed that show.
Kirill, I'll keep my eyes (and ears) open for that Xmas comp. on El Toro
Records, and for any other songs by the Spoilers. I've heard of the
Propellers, but not Mars Attacks! or the Bombers. I'll be looking out for
them, too.
