alien picks revisited

rock verb (mono_tones_1) - 17 Feb 2003 10:13:32

hi guys
a while ago there were some messages on picks.... one pick that was
mentioned as very good was the EBE alien pick. I ordered a couple to check
out because i was curious whether they really were as good as mentioned.
Well these are the results after three weeks of alien pick... the 'normal'
ones seam to wear as fast as any pick. they play well though. They are very
much like the the picks dick dale throws in the audience at concerts, (and i
guess he uses them too... ) just a tad thicker and a tad more flexible. but
pretty much the same.
The glow-in-the-dark picks however really seem to last a lot longer. Not
quite like the guy that said 'no wear after two years' but considerably
longer then most picks. I've played 2 three-hour rehearsals with one pick
now, and it still has the same shape, just a littly scratchy wear at the
edges. normally i completely ruin at least one pick at a rehearsal.
However, even the 'heavy' (i.e. -iest) seems a bit too flexi for
double-picking, esp after a while. Maybe it's just perception, but they do
seem to get more flexible once the room (and the hands) gets hot. Alien pick
meltdown? Maybe the'll make heavier ones if enough people ask for it.
anyway, these are by far the best picks i used as far as i can remember, so
thanks for the tip. And besides, the acclaimed strength of the alien picks
has inspired us to call our latest song "Alien pick vs Miracle Blade II -
the final battle", so it was worth the investment in any case.

I wanted to take one second to hit on Wannes' point about the
flexibility of the Alien picks: while I agree they to tend to bend
more once your hand (and therefore the pick too) heats up, that also
provides, as Dano once mentioned, a little bit more of a "tacky"
sense to the picks, making them a tad easier to grasp.
Also, while on the topic of picks, while I use the Alien picks when I
play surf, I have recently discovered a line of picks called "the
brain" made by a company called "Cool Picks". The grip of these
picks are unlike anything I've ever seen or felt before. It's hard
to describe what they use, but it's a texture that most like coarse
sand paper. There are hundreds of tiny plastic "barbs" as I'll call
them for lack of a better term, and when you grip tight, they grip
you right back! When I happened across one recently, I was playing
and had to stop mid-song to rotate the pick, since I wasn't able to
do it as freely because of these stubborn little buggers.
If anyone is interested, I can get you more product info, with either
a website or phone number or something. Through my job, I've talked
with the distributor, and I'm sure they'd be more than willing to
send out free samples to people who are interested.

I checked out those "Brain" picks on-line - very cool looking. They're
advertised as having a unique "Cat Tongue Matrix" that provides the grip -
just like a cat's tongue - pretty interesting . . . I always love to try out
new things - you think they'll send out samples, Bill? Should be put
together a SurfGuitar 101 sample request? The pricing is pretty good too -
Guitar Heaven has them for US $3.95 for a 12 pack.

I agree...the heaviest alien picks aren't quite heavy enough for me. Still
they are the best picks I have. There must be some elven magic in that
glow-in-the-dark plastic.

Dick,
Yeah... I'd say that "cat's tongue" description is pretty accurate.
If you (or anyone for that matter) want, e-mail me off-list and I
can send you a couple. I work at a store that carries them, and I'm
supposed to be getting in a sampler pack any day now. Once they
arrive, I should have plenty to go around.

Hi Bill, I am new to this surf group and would also like to try out the
picks. If you have enough, send to:

I have a Blues Deluxe amp and wanted to know
how to get more reverb out of it for surf music. I am
just getting into this style of music and would like
some more of a reverb sound but don't know what to do
to get it. Thanks, Armand DeRosa
