hello !
heard the news... but don't forget: there is a reason for everything ... i'm
not sure if everyone will be satisfied with such "simple" explanation. i'm not
sure if you have such saying in english, but there is a slovene one; i'll try to
translate it: EVERY BAD THING IS NOT NECESSARY A BAD THING... something like
that.
anyway- what is next logical step --- SURF COASTERS TRIBUTE .
Bitch Boys are in... actually i already have a chosen song.
all the best,
yours sincerely Robi

No, Please, no more more tributes for at least 10 years or so.
I was glad I had the chance to see The Surf Coasters live for a few times,
thanks Ferenc!

SG101ers-
I thought I would try to respond to all responses to
the news about the Surf Coasters demise at once. I
don't know if this is easier or more diificult to
understand, but here goes.
First, thanks to everyone who thanked me. As I have
said, it was a blast, and I had hoped to do it again
this year... as Jeff mentioned, definitely at the Pier
in HB, the West Coast, but we also talked about going
to the North East and I wish it could have happened.

I don't want to get into gossip about the band, but I
feel alright revealing my observations. Here are a few
things I noticed-
One thing I always wanted to find out about was what
happened to Tomo Sato. He was the first bass player in
the SCs and had a lot to do with their sound, and
wrote most of the songs on the first 2 albums. The
songs were mostly in a surf vein, and became the main
body of the SCs set throughout their career- songs
like "Dreams" and "Tsunami Struck". But he left the
band, and when I asked why, the subject changed
quickly. If you have the first "Best Of" CD, you can
see in the photos that Sato has his eyes blacked out,
hmmm... Anyway, what does this have to do with
anything? I think that after Sato left, Naka took over
as the main songwriter, and the music got
progressively more progressive. But, and it is a big
BUT, the record companies really wanted a surf band
because that is what they signed, so Naka had to
continue in the surf mode, which would cause anybody
great frustration. Naka also started to get a
reputation as a "go to" guitarist and has backed up
some major names in Japan. Playing huge halls and
getting to shred on guitar is a lot more appealing
than playing small clubs for dedicated surf fans. And,
make no mistake about it, surf is no more popular in
Japan than it is here.
So when it is said that the members want to do their
solo thing, that really is the truth. Naka is a huge
fan of surf music and loves to play it, but he wants
to try everything.

Jake, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but you might
want to look at your priorities. : )

They were just as happy to do the show with you, and
all the other bands. After every show they would
discuss the bands they had played with and we spun all
the CD given to the band in the van.

That is a cool song Tom. I can hear their inspiration
in the layers of distortion. Very cool!

I think rerecording "Dreams", and yet another version
of "Miserlou" is indicitive of the frustration. They
had to record Miserlou because that is their theme
song in Jp and the fans want to hear it. Dreams was
included because it was a "hit" in America, and
because the album it was originally released on is
long out of print. But it does seem flat. On the other
hand songs like "Nineteen" are alive, and I think you
can hear the band really cutting loose in a modern
style they are most happy to be playing in. One song
they played live every night in Jp was a prog
reworking of the Thunderbird theme, maybe 8 minutes
long, which went through time changes, modulations,
stylistic changes, and they killed it every night- it
was clear that that is what they liked best. I do
think the last album would be worth it just for
"Bumble Bee"...

I agree, though I think you would have to say they
explored more surf territory than just about anybody.

Interesting idea, though I can't imagine that anybody
outside of this list would be interested in buying it.
What song would you guys do Robi? I was trying to come
up with a list of bands that cover SC songs-
Madeira-"Intruder", Deoras- "Sea Knows", PDM- "Tsunami
Struck", Mach IV used to do "Dreams"... Maybe instead
of a formal release it could be a download thing...
Thanks,
ferenc

The cancer was for several months and I never took it as that bad of
news. The Coasters are broken up forever never to come back to
Seattle. I was hoping to get a chance to play with them someday.
