Surf Coasters News

Ferenc Dobronyi (ferencnd) - 02 Feb 2006 14:56:59

Well, it is official. The Surf Coasters have broken
up. The official reason is that the members want to
pursue their solo careers. Shigeo Naka has been
backing up other artists for a while now and wants to
do more of that. Also, I think he found the surf genre
too limiting. Sadly, there is no possibility for a
"Farewell" tour. If you saw them, consider your self
lucky.

Wow this is very sad news, but you Can't say they didn't put
out a shit ton of music in their 10 plus years.
I'm very glad I wnet up to Nor. Cal. the first time they came over,
and saw them twice then. and saw them 3 times in So. Cal. the 2nd
time they came over.
Does this mean that the cd's will be easier to find, or harder?
and for those who don't have all the old stuff. I wonder if it's
ok to make cdr's for them now???

Ferenc,
Without your generous involvement and personal sacrifice none of us would have
ever had the chance to see the truly awesome Surf Coasters! I was there for one
of their shows at the Lava Lounge in Hollywood, and as a Surf Music fan of 40+
years standing, I have to say that theirs is without question one of the
absolute best, kick-ass Surf Bands I've ever had the pleasure of seeing, and
Shigeo without a doubt is one of the best Surf Guitarists on the planet! This
is a memory that will last the rest of my life, and I want to publicly say a big
THANK YOU for the major role you played in making it happen for us West Coast
Surf fans!
Best Regards,

Nicely put Bruce.
When I saw the Surf Coasters play in Vancouver I wasn't sure what type
of response they would get. I don't really think anybody there knew
what surf music was. But a couple songs into the set the place was
incredibly rowdy. I was getting shoved into the stage by the crowd. I
got elbowed in the head and I "accidently" kneed this girl in the
head. I put accidently in quotations because I didn't malicously knee
her but she was trying to get underneath me. Lets just say she was on
a couple of the drugs and was acting terribly weird all night. I am
dissapointed I will never get to hear the Surf Coasters play Apache
again. As far as I know there is no recording of it. It was so good.
On a side note I got Surfdelic and their self-titled disc in the mail
yesterday. I have around ten or so now. And I always have the DVD. The
DVD might just be one of the greatest things ever.

Wow....crushing news...!
I too want to thank Ferenc for his tremendous efforts. My wife and I
were lucky enough to travel all the way from the Midwest to see them
on their first tour of the US at their Brookdale and Sacramento shows.
In addition to being blown away by their performances, we got to meet
for the first time several of you "scenesters", including Ferenc, Jeff
Bigtikidude, Baja Marty, Stretch, Ran & Dale, and Mel Waldorf. I also
got to see my old buddies from my first "real" surf show, Trode and
Tsunami Tom. And see the Sub-Mersians, Pollo Del Mar, and The Hypnotic
IV. Andy and the Hypno-IV guys were such a riot! Not to mention all
the great scenery: PCH from San Fran to Santa Cruz, the tide pools,
the mountains around Brookdale, the redwoods, Big Basin state park,
Roaring Camp Railroad...all of that was rolled into one very memorable
vacation I'll never forget.
From where I'm typing right now, all I have to do is glance to my left
and see the Brookdale show poster that the Surf Coasters signed for us.

That sucks. I'm not really sure what I can add to the previous posts,
but I also consider myself fortunate to have seen them live, and I
can't thank Ferenc enough for bringing them to the States twice.

Yeah, I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to do a show with the Surf
Coasters. Got to open for them in my home town (well, sorta; Brookdale is
close to Santa Cruz!) with my old band The Sub-Mersians, got to communicate
with their drummer about our Ludwig drum kits [we weren't really talking,
more like motioning and sign language!!!], got a great video of the show
courtesy of Big Mike Destiny, and got to meet new cowabungans like Brian.
You know, sometimes its a real thrill to be a musician!
Let's see...in the last five years I've had Laika & the Cosmonauts play in
my store, my band has opened for Slacktone, and we've opened for the Surf
Coasters. Can't do much better than that. Sure miss drumming in a surf band!!!

DP (noetical1) - 03 Feb 2006 16:53:29

To my ears, their last album (Samurai Struck) seemed somewhat strained
and disjointed. In otherwords, it sounded like the band was having a
difficult time with the material they chose. It sounded like they
lacked energy and cohesion.
it's too bad they couldn't work it out and continue on in the surf vein.
I still think there's lot's of unexplored territory ot there.

Actually DP,
they had a few albums over their career that were very out there.
3 video game soundtracks that weremore instro metal than surf. 1
techo surf album. a couple eps and albums that were a mix of
Psychedelic/garage/punk mix. I have them for the few good songs
on each, but it's hard to sit thru the whole thing without hitting
the next button. a was actually quite suprised to see them return
to a mostly surf sound, for their last 3 or 4 cd's.
Jeff(btd)
did you get to see them at the Lava Lounge or Suzy's???

DP (noetical1) - 05 Feb 2006 14:34:55

Jeff:
I LIKE that they were sort of "out there" and
experimental...I guess 'Samurai Struck' seemed to lack some
sort of focus...
...remember the SpaceCossacks? Each of their cds had a
theme or focus, and the songs all meshed and worked
together...you know what I mean? Their cd's play from the
first to last track seamlessly...
...I never had the opportunity to see the SurfCoasters
live, and now I regret it. I guess I will just look
forward to the SurfCoasters reunion gig in 2025...
damn, I'll be 60 years old then!
