Anyone got that meshugga Beach Party rerelease?
okay, I played it yesterday while driving to work, for the first time
in quite a while ( I usually commute by train and to be honest, and
if I drive longer stretches. I tend to take cd's with me that I don't
play often)
anyway, it suddenly struck me why I hadn't listened to it that often.
the drums, esp. the hihat, on the first track, annoys me - it seems
to be just behind the beat, and sounds ... well, hesitant. actually,
it sounds as if it was the last drumtrack played after a full day of
recording, and the drummer was just very very tired, with cramped
muscles.
Strangly enough, I don't hear this on the other tracks, the guys
obviously a very good drummer, but on the first track, he does. It's
a great album and I do like it and recoomend anyone to get it, it
just surprised me that they put this track first on the cd, I'd have
put it somewhere in the middle.
anyone else notice this, or is my hearing f'ed up?

'funny, i felt like the first song belonged somewhere else also...carol
First off, thanks for listening to the record. Very interesting comments.
I agree that Hava Nagila isn't the strongest song; I put it first because
it's the most familiar song. Of course, that begs the question why I didn't
do a better recording of the most familiar song, and for that, I claim being
Meshuggener. Oy, if I wasn't already racked with enough guilt in life, here
is more. I'll talk with my therapist about it this evening. :o)
Personally, my favorite songs on the record are Ose Shalom and Sherele.

I don't have the second CD yet, but I do have the first. I wanted to point
out that my 2 favorites are Ose Shalom and Sherele as well!
Sort of related--I went to my first Jewish function, a Bat Mitzvah, this past
weekend. During the service, I just kept thinking about how great some of the
songs would be as surf tunes, hehehe (lightening strikes). After the service,
at the reception, everyone wondered how I knew all the music. I just told them
they need to listen to Meshugga Beach Party.

Kristena, I hereby designate you an honorary member of the tribe!
So, what would be the ideal track order? If you were creating a Meshugga
Beach Party set list, what would be on it, and in what order?

Hi Mel,
I sure as hell wasn't trying to put the disc down. I like it a lot,
as well as 'regular' klezmer btw. I was just curious about the song
order and whether the drummer was indeed tired. I totally missed out
on the heyIknowthattune-factor, makes sense now.
Say hi to your therapist - aks him if he does goyem and give him my
number okay? ;-)

No worries, no offense taken. I'm pretty thrilled that anyone is listening
closely enough to notice this sort of stuff.
I don't recall what order we recorded the drum tracks. Shig played drums on
the sixteen original tracks and Tom "Tevye" Rockwell played drums on the
four new tracks. In all cases, I recorded the guitar/bass/keys along to a
drum machine track, had the drummer play along to that. Then I went through
and re-recorded bass and anything else necessary to match with the live
drumming. It's not my preferred method of recording, but it's practical and
flexible for time efficiency.
So, I'll pass along your number to my therapist.

Three quarters of the people I play the CD for absolutely
love it. The rest just shrug their shoulders, look puzzled
and don't get it. I don't give up easilly. If I have to bust
a few heads, so be it!!!
Have you put together the new band yet Mel?

Yes, the band is all filled out. Karen Dobronyi remains on paino/keys.
Joining on guitar Danny Snyder, on bass Steve Henderson, and on drums Stuart
Brandt. We've got our first full band rehearsal on Monday, and it should be
pretty exciting. News on shows should be coming before too long.
