surfaliciousdude1 - 01 Feb 2006 20:47:27

Just two quick questions... been a long time since I have had to do anything
to my amps, but the time has come. I have an original 65 blackface super
reverb 4x10 and it needs new speakers. Any advice? and secondly I have a
reissue 65 twin reverb custom 15" That needs new tubes... what do ya
recomend?
Thanx,
Lewd Dude

I kind of like the blue alnico Fender speakers, on tubes for the Twin, I have
had good luck with the Sovtek 6L6 quads and J&J(tesla) preamp tubes. Some good
deals are available on Ebay stores if you hunt 'em down.........best reverbs,
Eddie Katcher

After many months of rehearsal and gigs using the Jensen Neodymium ultra
lightweight 12" speakers, and numerous favorable comments from other band
members, as well as audience members, for the Super Reverb, the 10" 100w version
of the Jensen Neodymium speaker is available at $79.95 each, from Antique
Electronic Supply: www.tubesandmore.com in either 8 or 16 ohms, and they weigh
in at about 8.5 lbs, a dramatic weight savings from the more conventional magnet
speakers you might consider. The Super Reverb with 4 10's is one heavy mother,
and my bottom-line conclusion after over 6 months with the neodymium Jensens, is
that there's been NO sacrifice of tone, volume, or ballsy-bass, yet they feel
featherweight compated to anything else.
Tubes, unless you really want NOS everything, the JJ Teslas available from the
same source noted above, are quite a decent value, and perform beautifully. For
more money, the Groove Tubes 6L6-GE is a faithful reproduction of the 1960's GE
6L6, made with the original tube-making equipment which GT purchased from GE
years ago. They're available as matched duos, and matched quads, with ratings
from 2 or 3 up to 9 or 10, which indicate their tendency to break up and begin
overdriving. I've used the "7" rated 6L6 tubes in my Twin Reverb/Dual Showman
head with stellar results. However, they're quite expensive, especially
compared against the JJ's, which also do a great job in a vintage Fender amp.
You can call Groove Tubes at (818) 361-4500 and speak with one of their tube
experts to learn what they'd recommend for the exact sound you want to make. I
was up their one day, and one of the techs was having a conversation with Dick
Dale's amp tech on this very subject, so these guys are quite "Surf-friendly"
and aware of our concerns about tone and sound.
