I have some Untamed Youth on some comps, but I finally (thanks to Jeff
BTD) have a CD of theirs: "Invitation to Planet Mace". There are lots
of styles going on here, from the frat/party rock odes to Pabst Blue
Ribbon, hitting mailboxes with baseball bats, and chicks with beer
bellies, to extremely well done hot rod vocal surf (and this is coming
from a guy who generally doesn't like that stuff), to full on powerful
surf instros (F.U.J.I.M.O. and Ghost Wave). Tasty farfisa organ here
and there, along with some sax. Wow, I am really impressed! I was
curious if there was another CD of theirs that featured more of the
instro-surf stuff, or does each record have a crazy spectrum of styles
on it? Highly recommended. Great party material.
Ghost Wave is just amazing...worth the price of admission alone.

Hey Brian, check out Untamed Melodies. It's a CD of some of their
best stuff that was originally on vinyl, it's all early stuff, and
REALLY good. Youth Runs Wild is pretty good too, but it's produced
much slicker than the Untamed Melodies stuff.

I definitely agree - Untamed Melodies!
Back in the day of humble beginnings (96-98), The Tube Sharks covered
UT's 'Overcast'...a major league Surf Instro scorcher ;-) they loved it
on the campus of UC Santa Cruz. The song is a lot of fun to do.

TFJ has it right, Untamed Melodies is the best if you¹ve got to pick one,
IMHO.

Doh!
I guess I should read all the current posts before turning into a broken

-Brian,
thanks for the 2 nods.
I say get anything of the Untamed Youth you can find.
I think some of the early albums are on vinyl only.
I wish Deke would do a bit of surf stuff now and then, but he is a
great picker for all the other stuff too.

Our Untamed Youth rarities CD, Major Chaos, isn't quite up to the level of
the Untamed Melodies CD (that's the place to start, like others have said
here), and it probably isn't even to the level of their Estrus CD's. Heck,
it barely has any instros on it. However, it is a darn good party record and
a must-have for any UY fanatic. We're down to our last 50 copies or so, and
probably won't be making more, so if any of yous needs sum good ole rock n'
roll/frat rock/beach music, go aheads and snatch it up now!
Tracks: Since You Went Away - Hot Lips Baby - You Gotta Stop - SS 396 -
Minor Chaos - Don Stole My Girl - Surfin' Man - Come On Down To My Boat -
Don't Look Back - Doin' Me In - Make You Mine - Pabst Blue Ribbon (Original
Version) - My General Lee - Bird Dance Beat - Go Girl Go - Drag Race Tragedy
(Take 2) - I Don't Want You - Mercy Mercy - What A Girl Can't Do - Little
Latin Lupe Lu/Midnight Hour - Boss Hoss - Sophisticated International
Playboys Theme Song - Sea & Shore - Interview

Yep,
This is a good one! The 2 from the Dbl Crown 45 are especially
great.

I echo those thoughts Jeff. When I saw Deke I was hoping he'd do an
Untamed Youth song or two. But I wouldn't say I was let down.
Infact I was blown away. Jimmy Sutton is in his touring band and
I've talked with him and from what I've gathered it sounds like they
don't do any of the older stuff. But they do a surf song, or frat
song every now and then.
Yes, some of the early albums are vinyl only. But, Untamed Melodies
does help a bit. For example 9 songs from their first album "Some
Kinda Fun" are on the Untamed Melodies CD.
For the guitar geek in all of us, Deke told me this about a year
ago.
"I used the Jag on the first Untamed Youth album. I used Sammy's
reissue Jazzmaster on the 2nd Youth album, I used the 335 on the
Sophisticated Int. Playboys EP and all later albums like Planet Mace
and Youth Runs Wild. My 335 has been modified. The humbucking
coils on each pickup have
been taken out of the circuit, so that each pickup is only single
coil.
It sounds more like a Fender than a Gibson, and through the reverb
unit and into a Blonde Showman it's got a great, ballsy tone!"

--Now I'm gonna have'ta dig out that video - it's been a few years since
I've watched it. You're right though, Deke has had an odd infatuation with
metal over the years. I'm just trying to remember the name they used during
the UY metal gig on that video tape - I remember it being pretty funny! I
think you can still buy those UY videos from Deke - there's 3 of 'em. They
also do a Dolemite spoof called DoleMace that's pretty funny! We also took
Surfin' Man for our UY comp from one of those video tapes.

Hey Sean, I had no idea there were any videos of the Youth. I must
find these now!

I went to the Vegas Rockaround 2003 and saw the UTY reunion concert - I
thought they ripped as did alot of other bands - The Volcanics, Los
Straitjackets, Deadbolt, Saturn V, Dynotones, The Now (with Ghastly Garret
and Lord Hunt on lead and rhythm, respectively) - good times.

Nice! I've always wanted to go. They don't do the rockaround
anymore right? But if you search online you can find some pictures
from what appear to be some pretty killer shows. Speaking of Lord
Hunt, I just got a Witchdoctors CD in the mail today. Just got to
cruise through it earlier, but it sounds excellent. Kinda sounds
like the Bomboras meet Sir Douglas. Have you heard this stuff Jim?
