shipping an amp. head

sheckysgotreverb - 17 Jan 2006 19:48:07

Hi all,
I was interested in buying an amp on ebay, it's a vibrosonic with the
chassis installed in it's own cabinet creating a separate head. The
seller feels he must sell local because at 70lbs, it will cost upwards
of $150 to ship from Denver to CA. I would think that with all the amps
that are sold, they can't be charging that much to ship. Can anyone
tell me what they've paid to ship a comparable head, like a showman?

Thanks Bob, can you and others describe the method of shipping. Like
was it in a cardboard box, UPS, etc?

It's a good idea to have the tubes, especially the power tubes, removed and
wrapped separately. I've usually wrapped them in bubble wrap and put them
inside the head. Then put the head in a cardbox box, and put that in a box
of peanuts.

If the head weighed 70 lbs, at $40.00, some of the shipping cost was subsidized
by the seller.
I have an on-line account with UPS, and inputting the information as follows,
the costs of UPS Ground (cheapest) and UPS 3-day select, you can see for
yourself what UPS actually charges, going from L.A. to Phoenix, Chicago, and New
York:
Weight packaged: 75 lbs
packaging dimensions: 30"X16"X16" (To insure shipping, UPS requires the
packaging be at least 4" greater than the object being shipped, in all 3
dimensions.)
Amount Insured: $500.00
Shipped from L.A.:
To Phoenix:
UPS Ground $55.00 UPS 3-day Select $112.00
To Chicago:
UPS Ground $63.00 UPS 3-day Select $150.00
To New York:
UPS Ground $70.00 UPS 3-day Select $165.00
Also, although cheaper than bubble-wrap, "peanuts" are nowhere near as effective
for shock absorbtion, nor for keeping a 70 lb amp head from shifting within the
package. Even balled-up old newspaper does a superior job to styrofoam
"peanuts".

I recently shipped a Showman head to a member here. I removed the
power tubes and bubble wrapped them, took the back panel off the amp
and put them inside and put the back on to hold everyting together.
I then cut 8 2" thick corners off the styrofoam a computer monitor
came packed in and taped them on all 8 corners of the amp and
wrapped everything in bubble wrap and put the amp upside down (keeps
the weight of the transformers on the bottom) into a box. I then
took the box to the UPS store and had them pack my box into one of
theirs with 3" of peanuts around it. UPS is KNOWN for refusing
insurance claims due to "insufficient packing by the shipper"....by
letting THEM pack it there's no confusion over liability in case of
damages. The cost for the packing and shipment from NJ to Mich. was
$80. --- In , bruce duncan

Danny, it shipped via UPS standard ground. It was packaged
in a cardboard box, solidly overpacked with foam. Took about
a week to arrive from Michigan.

Is 70 pounds reasonable for the head? To me is seems like it should
weigh less. Isn't a Showman head somewhere around 35 pounds? I
remember that being my shipping weight of it.

Top

sheckysgotreverb - 18 Jan 2006 01:08:23

Jacob,
This is a vibrosonic put into a separate head cabinet. It's hard to
know how heavy the wood in the cabinet is and if a vibrosonic is
heavier than a showman. I agree though, 70 lbs seems high.

Danny, there's no way it weighs 70 lbs. A Vox AC30 or Fender Dual
Professional, both with two speakers and much more wood, are each
about 75 lbs! The Vibrosonic is pretty much the same amp as the
Showman - that weight is simply incorrect. PACKED it would be 45-50
lbs at most.

UPS cost depends on location. I just sold my 1962 Band
Master head and shipped it to MA from Albuquerque.
Cost:
$42.00 shipping
$47.00 special packaging and insurance (damn if I'm
going to package something of this value!)
Of course, if you're buying band equipment directly
from the factory or retail company, the cost of
packaging shouldn't be a factor.
total = $89.00

Bruce is right. They must've been using an old rate sheet, or just
did me a favor and absorbed part of the cost. Still, $150 to ship
from Denver is highway robbery.
