Freddy King did Surf !!

Tony (beatmantony) - 16 Jan 2006 12:33:47

Freddy King, legendary Chicago bluesman who influenced a lot of the
near modern blues guitar players like SRV and Clapton once cut a surf
album. I was at a Virgin MegaStore yesterday and going through their
bargain book bin when I came across a book on Album Covers. There it
was, included with other surf bands at the time like The Astronauts,
Thrashmen, Tornadoes was Freddy King's surf album. If anybody has a
copy of this please email me, I am dying to hear Freddy's take on surf.
Click to the link below to view the album cover, I also added some
other covers of that era. BTW, i think Pipeline was not by the Vaughan
brothers but a colaboration of SRV and DD.

The "Freddie King Goes Surfin'" album was simply a reissue of his earlier
"Let's Hide Away" album. Same tracks, just a different LP title and cover.
No reverb. All blues.

Bummer, anyway thanks for the clarification. Just started imagining
what Hideaway or The Stumble would sound like with reverb. I guess
during those times record companies would do some marketing that
appeals to the mass audience and be kind of coy on the actual product.
Anyway, speaking of reverb and blues, LA bluesman Kid Ramos plays with
an AC30 and a Fender Reverb tank, and he kinda cranks that reverb too.
I have not seen him for a while. Thanks again, _Tony

>>> "Freddie King Goes Surfin'"
A very good album, but it's just a collection of Freddie King instrumentals
repackaged as a "surf" album. Pure record company marketing. It just
occurred to me that marketing like that may have contributed a great deal to
the
public at large being a bit confused about exactly what surf really is. Heck,
I grew up thinking the Ventures were a surf band, and only learned different
after joining this list.
