Hey Everybody!
Came across this one while I was listening to the Delvar Surf
Session I - you know where the little box says "BUY" next to the
songs in the playlist? The Tornadoes "Bustin' Surfboards" was
playing, and the source was listed as the Cowabunga Box
Set. "Oooh!", I though, "I wonder if someone has the now out-of-
print Cowabunga Box Set in stock?" So, I clicked the "BUY" button,
and opened an Amazon window - here's the URL:
/B0000033S4/all/ref=dp_pb_a/103-7883115-8503051
As you might suspect, it's in "used" but "very good - never played"
condition - for only $199.95! (Added laughs - the "Low Price" logo
below the asking price!) Can you believe that? That's about
300% of the original street price - ouch!
I guess the "collectible" CD market mirrors the vintage guitar
market, huh? I remember that a few months ago Dave Wood was trying
to get a copy of the Cowabunga Box Set for a customer - did you ever
have any luck with that Dave? If so, hopefully it for less than
$199.95! Yikes!

Seeing how popular that box still is, I guess thats
the way to shift some units even today, make
attractive, compentent packages, with great infos and
artwork.
I wonder what it means for surf music, that the
definite release on the genre in discontinued.

it means you better hold on to that crate of LPs and keep
hitting the thrift shops. Nothing beats an old scratchy LP
to bring back the true feeling of surf, anyway.

Somebody does. My mom and step-dad bought me the Cowabunga box set for
X Mas...new, shrink-wrapped in box, $59.95. Add to that the 25 surf
CDs I scored on EBay, and I got a pretty complete surf music set
(including several third-wave bands like Los Meltones, Splashback,
Mermen and the Nebulas) for less than that used Cowabunga box set!
With eBay, it's caveat emptor my friends.
P.S. - Alas, my collection still lacks Laika & The Cosmonauts and
Man...or Astro Man?, although both had a cut each on the Cowabunga set.
P.P.S. - I'm offering me entire collection on eBay for $2,000, or
trade for a '62 Fender Jaguar ;-)

Forget what Phil Dirt says about them, Man or Astroman is absolutely
essential listening, as far as I and many others are concerned.
For MoAM, the first albums to get are definitely Project Infinity
and Experiment Zero. The first LP is their surfiest, I guess, but
there's a lot of filler. The same goes for Destroy All Astromen,
although that one has a couple of cool Ventures covers, an Avengers
IV cover, and of course, the theme song to the greatest TV show of
the 90's, Mystery Science Theatre 3000.
Live Transmissions From Uranus is a decent place to start, too, as
it has most of their best pre-Experiment tunes, although nothing
comes (came?) close to seeing them live. (Best concert I've ever
been to was them on their Spectrum tour.)
Let's see, what else ... some of the albums after Project Infinity
and Experiment Zero (namely EEVIAC & Spectrum) are great, too, but
they're not really surf. They're more along the lines of just plain
weirdness. (Except Made From Technetium, which is fairly boring, for
the most part.)
Oh, almost forgot. The B-sides collections What Remains in a Black
Hole and Intravenous Television Contimuum (sp?) are great, too.
Alright, that's enough babble for one evening. In conclusion,
Star Crunch era = Good to great (with one misstep, because as far as
I know it was him playing on Technetium)
Trace Reading / Blazar the Probe Handler era = Weird, but still great
Maybe someone else can steer you in the right direction as far as
Laika is concerned. I know little to nothing about them, sadly.

Hi Warren,
I ABSOLUTELY agree with you on MAN OR ASTRO MAN?. They are a great band,
and very essential to the surf music of the nineties.
In fact it was MOAM who got me intersted in surf music in the first
place, after coming from more punk-rock and metal inspired music, of
which I got a bit bored.
Indeed, "Project Infinity" and "Experiment Zero", are among there best!
Together with "Is it...?" And "Destroy all Astromen!" (for all the very
cool uptempo covers of first wave surf and instro tunes)
I also like "What remains in a black hole" and Your weight on the Moon"
I like the way they add there own style of music to the covers they
play, I'm also like the use of movie samples in these songs....Like in
"Journey to the stars" ....It's a strange kind of haunting music on an
instellar frequency....(it adds something extra)
Also their Goldfinger Cover is superb...
In fact I would never bought a Jazzmaster and a spring reverb if I never
had heard of MAN OR ASTRO MAN...
