I saw The Chantays play 2 summers ago at the Huntington Beach Pier &
they kicked some serious butt. They kicked into the opening of Killer
Dana, my son overwhelemed by the reverb looked at me wide eyed & said,
"Dad, I feel the music in my chest!" Me, "Thats a good thing son."
I saw the Lively Ones. Great sax work but they dont sound anything
like they did on their original albums.
I'd add the current incarnation of The Surfaris. The played a great 2
hour show July 4, 2005 on the beach at the HB Pier just before sunset.
Perfect.
The 3 I'd most like to see with DD would be:
1. Surfaris
2. Chantays
3. Tie between
John & The Night Riders
Eliminators
Bambi Molesters

I think a more interesting question would be who are the inactive bands you'd
like to see.
1. Sentinals
2. Bel Airs
3. Jim Messina and the Jesters
4. Original Surfaris

I'd like to see Messina and the Jesters too. When I haven't listened
to that record in awhile it's always nice to come back to. I'd
probably like to see Eddie and the Showmen, but I've been told they
were a different live band than studio band, and they often opted to
cover top 40 hits. I would not be suprised if other surf bands did
this as well. Still... I think it would be pretty cool to see Eddie
Bertrand playing a Jaguar. Although not a "surf" band the beloved
invaders era of the Ventures would have been unbelievable.

Definitely the Sentinals (Are any of them still active? I get the
feeling that, like the Rhythm Rockers, they were probably a good R & B
band that latched on to the surf thang).
Johnny Fortune---guy could play.
Bobby Fuller
Dave Myers & Surftones (maybe because I'm from Laguna Beach)
Matt, those are great answers, and I agree with you, but the question as
originally put, was the top four that are still actively
performing/recording/gigging, which pretty much excludes these acts, especially
Bobby Fuller!

Apologies to Matt, I didn't realize that someone had inserted a change to the
original question. INACTIVE surf/instro bands that I'd love to see perform live
again?
1. The Fabulous Planktones
2. Jon & The Nightriders
3. The Surf Raiders
4. The Crossfires
Now that would be a stellar line-up for a "Surfin' Sunday"!

At least two of these have reunited for shows - the Belairs and Eddie
and the Showmen for instance.
Jim Messina will never reform the Jesters - he really dislikes all of
that material, and doesn't even mention it on his website (at least not
as of last year), and seldom responds to questions about it.

The Sentinals would be very cool, though live they were mostly an R&B
band a la their Las vegas LP. I understand that Tommy Nunez (lead
guitar) plays blues in teh Central Valley somewhere, and Johnny Barbata
- probably on the oldies circuit with some incarnation of the Airplane
or someone.
Johnny Sudetta (Fortune) would be wonderful to see - a family band -his
younger brothers - wasn't the drummer 10?
I heard once that Myers still plays, and may be working on some
recording project. He was awesome!
Bobby Fuller - well, he's dead!

I have seen the reformed Showman and Belairs in a couple of their odd gigs. They
aren't currently playing and of the two, I would like to see the Belairs
continue. PJ's songs were so great. I'm well aware of Jim Messina's attitude. I
asked Jim Messina when he played at one of our Glendale block parties if he
would do "The Jester". He gave an emphatic "No!". Never-the-less, he still has a
place on my list of bands I'd like to see.

Jim Messina and the Jesters WOULD be a great one to see...but Jim is in
complete denial of his surf history and views it as sort of an embarrassing
stage of his youth. He was dating a friend of ours and was not excited to
see/sign a copy of his LP with The Jester when asked.
