Hello all
For New Years Eve my wife and I went to the Coach House in San Jaun
Capistrano, CA. We saw the three bands mentioned in the subject line.
First off let just say that I don't particuliarly care for clubs that
use a dinner club format for live bands. I much more prefer the open
stage/dancefloor where you can get up and mix it with the band. Having
to move your chair around whenever anybody tries to pass by becomes a
real pain in the ass. Not to mention the chairs aren't that comfy
after sitting in them for a couple hours either.
Now off to the bands -
The Marauders: traditional instro-surf band. They had great tone did a
mix of originals and covers. They did Pipeline very true to form of
the Lively Ones version. A Link Wray cover which the title slips my
mind right now. A medley they called Ventures a Go Go which was pretty
cool. Seemed based around Walk Don't Run and little pieces of other
Venture's classics where injected here and there.
They were a good band. If I had to suggest one improvement for them it
would be more banter with the audience. Three songs had passed before
any members of the band had spoken. Only the Bass player was seeming
to make eye contact with the audience for the most part.
-----
Graceland Mafia - 50's 60's based rock with a garage and surf/spy
sound. Lead singer Melvis does a play on Elvis. These guys were quite
fun. This is the type of band that needs to have a dancefloor in front
of the stage. They definitely livined up the crowd after a long break
to set up. I would definitely go to see these guys again.
-----
Dick Dale and his son: Well what can you say here. His tone was
fabulous. By himself he is still a showman. Unfortunately we left half
way through his set becuase it was getting boring listenning to him
boast about his son. Which his son seems to be a amazing talent as
well. Just his ethusiasm to be there was less amazing. Mr. Dale's
sheer power is still awe inspiring when he is ripping through the more
upbeat songs. The highlight of the evenning before we left was when my
wife leaned over and said he looks like Al Bundy.
Well, I hope everyone else had a happy and safe New Year. Hopefully
2006 will be fruitful for all.

Greg,
thanks for the review.
I kinda figured it would be a duet fest with his son, as most local
shows have become that lately, unless it's a bar only, with a strict
21 and up policy.
I guess I should be glad that I've seen him a good amount of times
really rip it up. I'm kinda hit and miss on going to see him
lately. But it'll be one of those things , like when Link Passed
away recently, where I'll say, I wish I had seen him more.

Greg - thanks for the review. Was Dick playing unplugged or plugged-in?
Happy New Year all!
BN
He was playing plugged in and roaringly loud compared to the previous
two acts.
