Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Eddie - Possible Surf Show In Atlanta Eddie's thoughts.....

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 27 Dec 2005 22:11:11

Hey guys, I'm 100% with Ivan and Agent 44 in that an all surf show would be an
ify situation. What would probably work best is to "sneak" in a surf show
under the guise of something else..Grand Opening of this or that festival or
whatever. We all know that the general public is pretty much not the biggest
fans of surf and instro rock but will dig it big when presented with it as a
part of something else entirely...so what we need to do is find a festival or
activity that we can "take over" one hopefully with some predetermined budget
so we can bring in some groups from outside the area to give the show some real
credibility......I haven't yet touched base with Randy's friend Wayne who has
been promoting all sorts of shows and activiites in and around the Atlanta area
for years, but sit tight......over the next several weeks hopefully we can
bounce some ideas around and see what comes of it.....I'll try and keep
everyone posted, so keep your strings fresh and your
fingers crossed.......Surf's up Guys, 2006 is OUR year........best reverbs

I JUST got off the phone with Wayne (my promoter friend), and he's
really jazzed about doing a surf show. He said the Atlanta Aquarium
angle is a great idea. They even have their own ballromm and
facilities. There's also a thing the city of Decatur does every
year called something like "The Beach in Decatur," where they even
truck in tons of sand for a beach party to kick off the summer.
Wayne is a city councilman in Clarkston, and he's buddies with the
city manager of Decatur, so if we decide on that, it's a near shoe-
in.
On the practical side, he asked me to get an estimate of how many
bands would want to play, where they would come from, and what their
expenses would be. If we can get an estimated total figure, we can
begin the negotiations with either the Aquarium or the city of
Decatur.
So if any bands that might be interested in an all day surf gig in
Atlanta early summer could let me know and give me an estimate of
their monetary needs either by posting here, or my personal email -, we can get a better idea of what we're up
against. :>}
Hey Eddie,
I was wondering if you would consider taking part in the
organization negotiations with Wayne and I ... Your experience and
knowledge would be a great help and could make the difference.

Eddie,
I admit it. Sometimes I let my enthusiasm get the better of me.
Finding an existing festival to "take over" is a great idea (and
much more practical). Perhaps something like the Driveinvasion at
the Starlight Drive-in. Someone mentioned that it was a great show
last year (and it's only about 6 miles from my house!).
I was hoping to bring Wayne up to your Wednesday night Surge!
practice tonight so ya'll could talk things over, but I'm under a
nasty deadline on a big project for the small software company that
I run, and I just can't get away. Will you be practicing again next
Wednesday? Or I could have him give you a call if you prefer. :>}
Email me at home and let me know. I'm always there as I (as well as
all of my employees) work from home. In fact, I rarely get out of
my pajamas till noon ... life is hard ...

Heck, I work in a radiation lab......I have neve been able to crack the dude
that books the Drive Invasion. Alex is an odd fellow. He has a long running
association with the Penetrators and also Johnny Knox and those guys from the
L5P mentality......He has rarely given us the time of day....but I am sure
there are all sorts of other possibilities. We just need to do some brain
storming......I'll let you know on the practice schedule for next week.....good
luck on your project.....Best Reverbs, ed

Brian Crum (goobcrum) - 28 Dec 2005 12:04:27

I think that doing a surf show under the guise of something else is
a good idea... For example I had an idea a while back for a surf
show in Tallahassee, FL...
Each year, the city puts on a "Downtown Getdown" before each home
FSU football game... I was going to suggest a show with The
Intoxicators!, and The Surge for the next FSU/Georgia Tech football
game... The city could do some sort of beach party theme... They
usually have a beach party night each year with some type of Frankie
Vallie cover band...
Unfortunately with the new ACC conference, FSU doesn't play GT at
home until 2009... So that's sorta out... :( I think that it would
have worked if I could have used the rival school surf band idea...
I might just pitch it anyway... what do we have to lose...
The thing about trying to "take over" Drive Invasion for a mondo
surf show I don't entirely agree with... If you look... DI has been
really friendly to surf(ish) bands in the past... Davie Allan & The
Arrows, The Penetrators, The Intoxicators!, Capt. Flumpkin & His
Amazing Flaming Seamen, and Deke Dickerson all played there within
the last 2 years... The festival is pretty surf friendly if you ask
me and definitely worth checking out...
I agree that more brainstorming needs to be done...
Gregory's idea about "testing the waters" with local bands is a
great idea... The Surge, The Broken Spokes, El Capitan, The
Penetrators, and The Intoxicators! are all within a reasonable
distance to be able to play a show... and not break the bank...
An angle that could be taken is to have a "guitar festival"... That
would open the door to bring in acts like Big Sandy, Southern
Culture On The Skids, etc... You could do something similar to
Bubbapalooza that they have at the Star Bar... load it up with surf
bands... Part of the reason that Bubbapalooza, and Drive Invasion
work is because of the rockabilly crowd... They don't seem to mind
surf that much either... It's similar with the exotica/tiki crowd...
Another idea is to load all of our east coast bands up and travel to
California for some shows... What do you think?
Just remember that it takes money to make money... Ha!
Cheers!
