The Madeira

Bob Steingraber (bobsteingraber) - 27 Dec 2005 19:59:58

I just got my copy of The Madeira's "Sandstorm" in the mail,
listened to it, and I am absolutely B-L-O-W-N A-W-A-Y !!!
Ivan, you guys really nailed it! Congratulations on a
phenominal CD! Words that immediately come to mind are:
spectacular, majestic, epic, powerful, and mysterious.
Where did you come up with the cocept for this project?
Wow!!! Like Jacob, Brian and the others, I recommend,
no, urge you to get this incredible CD, post haste. You will
not be disappointed. Ivan, you know I'm gonna be forced
to travel back East to catch the band in action. Here's hoping
you can manage a West Coast trek in 2006. Many thanks for a
great CD, and truckloads of inspiration!!!
Bob S.
P.S. Congrats on the Space Cossacks "Never Mind the Bolsheviks"
being released. Another great CD!!!

Wow, thank you VERY much for such kind comments, Bob! We really
appreciate it. I'm so glad you liked it so much.

It evolved over a period of time, but the initial idea I had was
back in '99-'00, as I moved to Indianapolis, and as it became
obvious that the Space Cossacks' days were numbered, so I started
thinking about my next surf music band and project. I always really
loved the flamenco, north-african and middle-eastern influences in
surf music, and though there are many individual songs in both
classic and modern surf music that build on those foundations, no
artist really tried to push that to its logical extreme. Lots of
space-themed surf music out there, horror, car, etc., but this
hadn't been done before. In the end, it didn't turn out quite as
extreme in the sense of relying just on those tonalities and sounds
and moods as I first envisioned it, but it works for me. If we tried
to push it in that direction any harder, it probably would have
ended up too one-dimensional (I worry about that already, as it
is). Anyway, there you go. I suspect that the future stuff we'll
won't be as self-conscious about going in that direction. In fact,
I'd really like to go in a bit more trad direction, but we'll see
what happens.

I heartily concur!! :)

Well, maybe, maybe, we'll see what happens. I'm hopeful. However,
don't let that stop you from treking our way in the next few months,
anyway! ;)

You are very welcome, and thank YOU again for all the compliments
and for purchasing it.

Thank you, again, Bob!
Best,
Ivan
