Eddie,
I've been waiting to hear back from Wayne on possibly putting together
a surf show here in Atlanta. I haven't heard back from him yet (his
wife just got out of the hospital), but I'm sure he'll be all for it.
I wonder how difficult it would be to get some other surf bands to
play for an all day show this Spring or Summer?
Randy
Randy, I'll bet we could get several of the "more local" groups together....The
Penetrators and the Intoxicators for sure and If we actually had something of a
budget, the Maderia, from Indianapolis, Those crazy guys from the Nebulas
could probably be talked into it.....we could post an open invatation on
Surfguitar101 and see what the interest was......and of course, us for
sure......keep in touch and thanks in advance, I'll let you know about Surge
night at Elliot's this week......eddie k

That just reminded me of 2 years ago when The Intoxicators! played
Drive Invasion in Atlanta...
One of the bands on the second day was a surf band dressed as
pirates that called themselves Capt. Flumkin & His Amazing Flamin'
Seamen... (They threw out miniature plastic rum bottles as part of
their gag... Way cool!!!)
At the end of the show the lead guitarist/head pirate whipped out a
can of generic Kroger brand lighter fluid... He then poured the
entire can on the Silvertone that he had been playing...
For the next two or three minutes he tried unsuccessfully to light
the guitar on fire...
Directly behind him was a big Kroger grocery store banner...
they were one of the sponsors...
I got the biggest kick out of this... apparently their lighter fluid
doesn't work too good...
Maybe we could get them to be a sponsor for the show though...
Oh... Check with Johnny Knox... Last time I talked to him he said
that he was playing in a surf band with the Captain Flumkin guy...
They might be interested in a big Atlanta surf-a-thon gig...

Hey all! Hope you had a great Christmas, and got what you wanted
(I'm at the moment in the process of putting the choice 15 hours or
so of vintage surf cuts on my new iPod!).
Eddie, we'd LOVE to do something like this, and I hope you can pull
it together. But I'd just like to point out that something like
this had already been done - and in Atlanta, no less! In '97, a
promoter put together the flagship show of the Surfari USA tour in
Atlanta - the lineup was Agent Orange, Jon & the Nightriders, the
Penetrators, the Volcanos, the Neptunas, the Space Cossacks, and a
few other bands that escape me right now. While seeing these
amazing bands on one stage was a near-orgasmic experience for mega-
surf-music-nerds like me, the whole night was a major bust. I
remember the managers and representatives of the bands arguing after
the show into the wee hours of the night, cause the promoter
couldn't even come close to paying out the guarantees he promised.
It was held in Variety Theater that holds probably 750-1000, and I
think the total attendance was 150. Boy, did THAT place look
empty! And let's not forget that surf music was a lot bigger among
the general public in '97 than it is today. So, I hate to pour cold
water over this, but I just don't see how this is financially
viable, especially if you want to cover the expenses of the bands
that will come from further away. But here's hoping you can figure
out a way!
Best,
Ivan
I was THERE!!!!!. terrible turnout.....great show.....I kept looking around
thinking that sombody in that place MUST want to play in a surf band.......Jack
(Woody) Booth was there but I didn't meet him until later.....If we can put
someting like this together, it really needs to be a part of something bigger
(with a budget). Maybe something with the new Atlanta Aquarium, or Lake Lanier
Islands. I hope we can do something. I too think that surf is on the
rise......will keep all informed........best holiday reverbs to all, eddie k

Hi Brian,
I JUST got off the phone with Wayne (my promoter friend), and he's
really jazzed about doing a surf show. He said the Atlanta Aquarium
angle is a great idea. They even have their own ballromm and
facilities. There's also a thing the city of Decatur does every
year called something like "The Beach in Decatur," where they even
truck in tons of sand for a beach party to kick off the summer.
Wayne is a city councilman in Clarkston, and he's buddies with the
city manager of Decatur, so if we decide on that, it's a near shoe-
in.
On the practical side, he asked me to get an estimate of how many
bands would want to play, where they would come from, and what their
expenses would be. If we can get an estimated total figure, we can
begin the negotiations with either the Aquarium or the city of
Decatur.
So if any bands that might be interested in an all day surf gig in
Atlanta early summer could let me know and give me an estimate of
their monetary needs either by posting here, or my personal email -, we can get a better idea of what we're up
against. :>}
Hey Eddie,
I was wondering if you would consider taking part in the
organization negotiations with Wayne and I ... Your experience and
knowledge would be a great help and could make the difference.

Hey, of course I LOVE the idea of you guys putting together a big
surf show here in my Atlanta hometown, but Ivan is right about the
very real need to be cautious about overestimating the possible
turnout. I'd feel awful if any bands traveled here from other
states and played for less than 200 people, as they did during that
heavily promoted Surfari USA show back in '97, which was a box office
disaster.
There are LOTS of local surf bands who could "test the waters," so to
speak, before anybody committed to importing bands from other cities.
Why not set up something with The Surge, The Broken Spokes (whose
leader even deejays that cool LONGBOARDS AND LONGHORNS surf show on
WRAS 88.5), and El Capitan (the former leader of Captain Flumkin,
who's now got both Johnny Knox and Jet Powers in his lineup)?
And, Eddie, didn't you tell me about another new surf band that's
based in Athens (which is so close it's almost an Atlanta suburb)?
Seems to me you could set up something with three or four of those
acts at the new Atlanta Aquarium, or get a couple of 'em booked into
that otherwise awful Decatur Beach Party.
BTW, Seems it would be a cinch to get The Surge booked into the
latter, given Eddie's track record with playing one of Decatur's
other big outdoor festivals <wink>, but bear in mind that this "beach
party" is mostly a kiddie fest. Sure, they block off East Ponce and
fill the street up with sand, but that's mostly just so toddlers can
build sand castles while their parents stand around and beam and take
pictures. (During any approach made to the organizers, be sure to
drop constant references to all the Penetrators' little progeny!
Apparently that's the coin-of-the-realm with whoever puts the thing
on.)
Also, be aware that the music at the previous Decatur "beach party"
events has never been in any way related to surf/beach tunes before --
instead it's been mostly boring funk and tedious jazz -- so there
would be a bit of a hurdle to jump, I suspect. Stressing the all-
instrumental angle (No offensive lyrics to offend the little ones!)
and the playing-at-polite volume angle (Never too loud for tiny ears!)
would be ideal.
I attended two of these events in the past but left quickly both
times because the music was so dull, the beer was preposterously
overpriced, and I felt out-of-uniform without a stroller and diaper
bag. If you guys can overcome the first hurdle, I'll bring extra brew
money and disguise my Welsh Corgi in a bonnet and jumper.

All of those points are very good ones,
But nothing beats the scene of a bunch of toddlers dancin' to surf
tunes. I have seen it happe a few times and work here in So. Cal.
Volume and tempo are definelty things to keep in mind. way loud and
way fast are good for the fans, but the little ones and moms will be
blown away. Which would be funny, but you might not be asked back.
:-)
Good luck,
Jeff(bigtikidude)

There is a sometimes-active surf band in Athens called
The Curl. They have a myspace page, Sometimes they're trad
sounding and sometimes they throw in lots of
distortion and other effects. The lead guitar player
is a typical Athens townie and does lots other things
with other bands including playing music onstage
through an Atari 1500. I've never attended one of
those shows and don't plan to. They re-emerge
periodically for shows so it's a possiblity.
