Re: Crazy Gigs

Klas Fjellgren (surfites_64) - 22 Dec 2005 16:08:01

One time in the Daytonas, due to some confused booking, we had to play
in front of a crowd of senior citizens. They expected a pleasant
evening with musical entertainment but they were shocked about how loud
we played. They told us to turn the volume down... well, we told them
to turn down their hearing aids!

We have a video tape of the Treble Spankers playing some old folks
home. Most of it, if not all, was shot so you could see the stunned
look on the old folks' faces. Classic.

hey those stories are politically incorrect!
kidding
I understand the DAYTONAS had some 'confused booking' - what about
the Treble Spankers? was that show booked ON PURPOSE?
DID YOU SELL ANY MERCH? just curious
haha
this summer I saw Vinny O's 'SURF SQUAD' (authorized tribute Dick
Dale band) at a cancer outdoor fundraiser - they were asked
to 'seriously reduce' their volume as well
great stories gentlemen

The notoriously loud Surf Report once played at a Library. I bet you can figure
out how that went!
We were also un-invited from a punk-rock joint called LiveWire because the
first (and only) time we played there we were loud. Over the next 6 years of
asking to get gigs there, the owner only remembered that we played really loud,
and wouldn't book us.
But my favorite image of being asked to turn down came from some our first
regular gig at Hennessey's Tavern - a bar/restaraunt, where the manager would
simply come out and wave the universal (and highly motivating) "Thumbs-Down"
sign.
Surf Report also played (once) to blue-hairs at a hotel restaraunt, who
promptly sucked-down their complementary drinks and split when we started
playing. This pissed-off the manager, so he shafted us out of the free hotel
rooms and bar-tab we had negoitiated earlier (but not gotten in writing.)
...Not to mention the broken bass string on the first note of one gig - with
no replacement strings - so we just packed-up and left.

Some Crazy Penetrator gigs that come to mind...
Playing on the roof of an RV in the parking lot of Legion Field in
B'ham before an Alabama v Hillbilly - I mean- TN game.
Getting double booked with "Open mic Blues night' at Maxwell's in
Hoboken.
Playing the finish line of a Marathon in B'ham. Not much dancing at
that one.
Playing on the front porch of an old plantation mansion in Greensboro
AL on Easter. Sticks couldn't make that gig so Rollo sat in on drums.
Rollo being of the african american persuasion made for some funny
jokes.
We played on the roof of a house at a rugby party in Tuscaloosa.
Playing on the roof of the refreshment stand at the Starlight Drive-in
in Atlanta.
We set up the full band to play in a 6x10 room for a radio show in
Cincinnati.
And then there was the usually all black dance club in downtown B'ham
that was trying to attract 'white folks' so they booked us on a Wed
night. Imagine the bar in Animal HOuse with red velvet wall paper, take
out Ottis Day and the Knights and insert the Penetrators. We were
actually pretty well received by the folks who were there.
Have reverb, will travel....
