More Nocturnes?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 21 Dec 2005 09:32:59

I've got one of the comps that Paul Johnson produced
long ago (I'm afraid I don't remember the name of the
series but it's still available on his website, IINM)
with a number of Nocturnes tracks and I've always
liked them. I know this has been discussed before but
did The Nocturnes ever release a full length, and is
it obtainable?

I don't think they ever released anything unless I misread the liner notes
of American Surf Treasures Volume II, but it said Third Star was to be PM
Productions first hit single (but was never released). Since their name is
nowhere to be found in John Blair's "Illustrated Discography..." I would
say that is correct. Thanks to PJ for releasing that material years later
on the South Bay comps and of course to The Space Cossacks and Bomboras for
covering some of that material and bringing it to a newer audience. While
both American Treasures CDs are must-haves in their own right, I would
recommend Volume II just to get those original Nocturnes recordings.

TFJ,
you are correct the Nocturnes stuff was never released in the 60's.
Some of the recordings on the cd is taken from acetates(sp) that
were going to be pressed as singles, and the other tracks from Paul's
3 track (I believe) tape deck. Jim Frias one of the Sax players of
the Noctunres told me they were making a pretty good name for
themselves, and alot of the other bands in the scene, thought the
Nocturnes were really good musicians(some jazz trained). But it was
too late in 64, and Paul was trying to shop it around to the Lables,
and none were intersted, since evrything at the time was in the
middle of the Brittish invasion.
Paul Johnson told me recently that he just found some more
Nocturnes songs, that weren't released on the cd.
Good news indeed, we need to bug him to put that out.

Thanks for the info, Jim. Any tips on where to find those American
Treasures releases? I searched the usual suspects on-line, but couldn't
seem to find the discs (other than going straight to Gee Dee).
Thanks!

If I recall correctly the Nocturnes played a few songs on the
Rendezvous Ballroom Surf Reunion 2000 CD. Guitarist Bruce McCoy is now
with the Breakaways.

Hey HB,
Yes you are correct they did have a few songs on that cd,
They also have a New Full length studio cd. With a couple covers of
their own old songs, and Some new vocals and some new good instros.
Bruce McCoy is the Drummer for the Nocturnes, but plays guitar in the
Breakaways. They play around Laguna Beach and Balboa Island a bit in
the Summer. Sometimes they play at the Mall(The Block of Orange)in
front of the Movie Theaters. Not my Favorite band now that they do
so much vocals, but check them out if you get a chance.
