your best musical instrument/equipment purchase of 2005?

Bill Bergstrom (surfbandbill) - 20 Dec 2005 16:13:59

MOSRITE! MOSRITE!!!
But then again, that may just be me ;D...........
And since I'm here, my best purchase of the year is looking like a
Sakai electric I got off ebay for $150 - Mosrite-ish, with the German
top and somewhat Mosrite whammy bar, but with FOUR beefy single
coils. Once I clean up the guitar and it's electronics, it should be
a beast, though it should be avoided by those with smaller hands.
And I have to give love to the Fender Bronco that I finally finished!!!

Well...It was sorta working. One of the pickups had an intermittent lead
problem and would turn on and off at will. Overall, it functioned but the
pickguard was pretty well shrunk and the pickups were NOISY and very
microphonic you could literally yell into them and it sounded like the
great and powerful Oz was talking out of your amp. The guitar had seen
better days but for $200 plus pickguard material and some WD lipsticks I got
a one-of-a-kind wonder.

Wasn't your best purchase a silver face Twin, Billy? I recall it was a great

Yeah. Your absolutely right Marty. Although I did'nt consider it a purchase, it
was the coolest thing that happened to me in 2005, (equipment wise).
Shortly after my car got broken into, and my Fender Twin was kindly stolen,
(kindly meaning, they did'nt break my windows), my neighbor asked me if I might
be interested in an amp his brother gave him, and he really did'nt have room to
store it. He said, "I think it says Fender Twin Reverb, or Fender Twin Rubarb,
or something like that." Then he said. "It's yours if you want it".
At first I said, ah...., and then I said ah............. and then I said
ah.................. and then I said ....... ah..... OK.
I took it home. Plugged it in. Creamed my jeans, and two days later, ridden with
guilt, (Mother's Day), I knocked on his door, handed him 50 bones and told him
to take his wife out for dinner.
So yeah, I guess you can say it was the best purchase of 2005. Indirectly. ;D
Billy
P.S. It was'nt until talking to you Marty, I realized it was a 78.

Best purchases for 2005 for me:
Kalamazoo 6 string lap steel
Kalamazoo Model 2 amp (great for the studio)
Northern Tenor Ukulele (just got it last weekend)
I'm sure these will turn up on the next USK CD (fall 2006?) in one way
or another.

Up until yesterday I was going to reply back to this post by saying
that my best musical instrument/equipment purchase of 2005 was a pair
of 2B Vater Drumsticks... but I can't do that now...
I walked into the pawn shop across from my office yesterday and picked
up a 1995/96 MIJ '62 Jazzmaster reissue... :)

There's a nice picture of Jimi Hendrix playing a Jazzmaster circa '66 in the
latest Mojo.

Thanks, Eddie K. I'll keep you in mind when I run into problems with
it... I really couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the jazzmaster
sitting behind the counter... in a corner... next to a set of crappy
golf clubs... I asked the manager if it was for sale... then what
the price was... paid... and laughed all the way back to my
office!!!!!
It's the sunburst design with the a red tortoise pickguard...
You're welcome about the positive press too... You guys put on an
awesome show that night... So it was well deserved praise...
(Wow, I'm floored that someone actually went to our website and read
something... Sweet! )
Do you guys have a website? I would be more than happy to add a
link... So, Let me know...
Anyway, it would be nice to have another show with both The Surge
and The Intoxicators!... We'll have to work on that in '06...
Cheers!

Our local Media Play is going out of business, and I went down there last
night . 30% off of everything. I noticed a little Fender Frontman 25R
sitting on the floor all by itself (no box or AC cable), and it took about
45 minutes to find out the price. I finally found out it was going for
$139.99. I went home and looked it up in the Fender Summer Price Catalog,
and it lists for $229, so I talked my wife into letting me get it (Me: "but
Honey, it's a Fender with a 10" speaker and reverb, and all I have is this
old Peavy ..." Her: "Well, it IS cute ..."). We went down there this
morning, and it was still there, so my wife went into her "bargining" mode.
She did her best to talk them down as it didn't have a box, AC cable or
manuel), but they weren't having any of it. In fact, they went back into
the back and found the box and everything else. I took it up to the
register, and it turns out it was 30% off of $139.99, so I ended up paying a
little over a hundred bucks for it.
I got it home and plugged my 4 pickup Teisco into it, cranked up the reverb,
and I was astounded at how good it sounded. I've never heard 25 watts sound
so full, clean and present ... and LOUD! My wife even said, "My God! It
sounds just like all that new (surf) music you've been listeneing too.."
She's only heard me learning Treble Spankers on my acoustic.

I'm not really sure what model it is. I bought it about 15 years ago
at a yard sale for eight bucks! The Teisco logo came off of it
sometime during our move to our new house a couple of years ago. :>{
It's a four pickup model with four switches (three white and one
black), two volume knobs and one tone knob, and a really great tremelo
bar. The machine tuners had gotten so tough to turn that I had to use
my string winder to tune it. I bought new machine tuners for it a
couple of weeks ago, and yesterday I unstrung it, took the originals
off, and pulled out the first of the new ones - and it wouldn't fit.
It was too big for the hole. And even if it would have fit, the key
peg was too short to work anyway (the key wouldn't hve stuck out far
enough to turn it). So I got some light machine oil and oiled up the
old ones (it's all one piece) and found some powdered graphite for the
inside of the plastic peg sleeves that fit in the headstock, put it
back together, and they are like new! It even holds its tuning after
liberal use of the tremelo bar.
I'll post a couple of pics of it if you'd like. It's got a couple of
small dings, but for eight bucks, it's a wonderful guitar, and the
tone, I swear, is pure single coil goodness!
