Way cool Carol!
a tad less impressive: ;-)
best purchase, in terms of what it does for your sound and playing, a
shitload of Dunlop Ultex .70 picks. awesome sound, nice to play (right
amount of flappyness and rough surface) value for money sucks cause I
break two per rehearsal.
[not to go anal on picks again, but i found these after DaveW
supporting gels a while ago for their sound. I tried those, while I did
like the sound of the gels, I found them way too thin to play
comfortably. I ended up with the ultexs which sound very much like the
gels, but stiffer. I came from glow in the dark ebe pick which are a
dream to play with and last forever, but sound dull, now that I
switched. ]
other great purchases include:
a Crate Powerblock (best value for money)
an empty (non-original) bandmaster cab (a steal from a local shop: it
had two celestions in it: ME: how much is that cab? SHOP-GUY: it's 200
ME: and how much are just the speakers? SHOP-GUY: well, it's all about
those great celestions, those are 200 by themselves. the cab's just
extra. ME: I just want the cab... LOL - in the end he let me take it
for 25 euros. original Fender tolex, grillcloth and hardware, built to
fender specs. I intend to put jensen neo's in this cab, just scraping
up the dough.)

I made a lot of gear purchases this year but the best was the '54 Masterbuilt
Strat I got on Ebay. My favorite feature is it's light weight and palm-filling
baseball bat neck with 7.** inch radius. It has become my old brown shoe.
For best in terms of value, I echo Wannes with the Crate Power Block head.

mmmmmmm... block inlays. Matching headstock too?
How does the CIJ compare to the AV sound wise? Just curious?

Soundwise it just has less of a kick. I put AV pups in the CIJ as
well. I am sure it is in the electronics where the sound lacks. The
CIJ still sound great. And it doesn't really lack in the tone
department. There is maybe just a little less frequency but to the
untrained ear they would sound exactly the same. I get the comment
every surf guitarist hates all the time. "Why do you have tow of the
same guitar?" The neck on the CIJ is actually much better.

I forgot to reply to your question on the matching headstock. It does
indeed have a matching headstock.
Here is the CIJ

Nice couple of geetars!
I never used to like it, but recently that bound neck and block inlays look has
really grown
on me.

Thanks Paul. I personally was never a huge fan of the bound neck and
block inlays. I think it looks good on some guitars and bad on others.

A friend of mine gave me a pick called a "Cat Tongue" pick. The gripping
surface feels exactly like a ... well, a cat's tongue! You almost CAN'T
drop it. I've been trying to find them at a lot of the music stores here in
Atlanta but most have never heard of them. A few of the stores have offered
to order them, but they only come in lots of 70, which would be nearly a
lifetime supply for me!
The only real purchase I made in 2005 was my Martin D-15 acoustic, which I
bought just before I (re)discovered instro surf a couple of months ago. I
DID, however, dig out my 4 pickup Teisco Del Rey and Peavy Musician amp. I
ended up having to replace the tuning machines (they were bad when I bought
it for ten bucks at a pawn shop 20 years ago), but it plays pretty good.
After playing bass in a King Crimson oriented instro band for the past 15
years, it's a little difficult to get my chops back, but I am determined to
become a surf musician (hopefully with a little help from ya'll).

Best purchases?
Like Marty and Wannes, without a doubt, the Crate Power Block 150 Amp!!
and of course, together with that, the Jensen Neodymium Ultra-Light-Weight 12"
speakers to go in the Bandmaster cab, with the Power Block.
Guitarwise, the "Wesley" San Diego, (Looks like a cross between a Jazzmaster
and a Strat), in gorgeous Light Cobalt Blue Metallic!!

Paul,
I put a pair of SD Antiquity II JM pups in my vista jagmaster. It was
a bit of a job modifying the pick guard and the cavities but it worked
out nicely. Of course it helps that I'm a woodworker, if you're not
used to delicate work like this, be very deliberate in your actions and
take your time. I have to say I'm less than happy with my bridge, which
is a standard strat style bridge. I can't seem to lessen the tension on
the tremolo anywhere close to the one on my AV jag - any tips???
But overall it's a great guitar at an amazing price.

My sunburst Fender Eric Johnson Signature Strat gets my top
vote(unbelievable tone and sustain, super light weight, a lot
of cool features). Honorable mention goes to Joe Naylor and
his Reverend guitars and amps. I picked up a Reverend Spy
(3 lipstick single coil pickups, with bigsby, and faux quilted
maple top and back. Ferenc has been known to play a Spy), and
a Rocco (dual humbuckers with coil tap switches: very versatile
guitar), and lastly a Reverend Goblin 15/5 tube amp with 10"
speaker. In my opinion, Reverend offers tremendous value.
Everything they make has incredible tone, super light weight,
and reasonable cost (although the American line of guitars have
skyrocketed in price over the last six months). Sorry: I'll get
off my soapbox now. :-)

My best purchase? The Allparts neck to go with the

Keep in mind that there are VERY few surf guitar
options for lefties. ;-/ I decided to try something
different.

Paul Fritz (pablofleece) - 20 Dec 2005 01:31:48

Danny,
I modified an old Vox Phantom by hand-cutting a new MOP pickguard for three
lipstick pups and modified the original selector to a five-way. It worked
like a champ and sounds great... So nice, in fact that Bernard of The Migs
has had it for months and I may not get it back (no worries, he¡¯s a fabulous
human and without a doubt gets more music out of it that I will). I did
take woodworking classes in high school and college and have a friend with a
full shop. I plan to be careful and slow with the mods on the Jagmaster.
The only real decision I have is whether to put jazzmaster or mosrite
pickups in it. (opinions?) I¡¯ve played both guitars ¡© love the tones but
want a jag neck...(small hands...smell like cabbage)
When I got the heavy gauge fever (partially from posts by Ivan P. and Rip
Thrillby years back), eventually ending up with a 56-15 set on my Jag, I
also put heavy strings on my then-backup Aria Pro III. The Floyd Rose trem
required a full complement of 5 springs to handle the tension but worked
fine. I did notice that the tremolo on the shop Jagmaster I tried seemed to
be a bit stiff. That one had three springs. I guess I¡¯ll have to play
around with it. The smooth tremolo is one thing I love about my Jag and one
of the reasons I¡¯m letting my otherwise nice Eastwood HiFlyer go.... (well
that and the bar-fight-ready club of a neck)

Aaaahhhh! I hope the Vox wasn't working before you modded it. What did you
do with the old pickguard/pickups? I have a Phantom copy with uninspiring
Strat-ish pickups. I've been wanting a set of real Vox pickups for it. (My
favorite sounding guitar ever was an old Vox Mark VI that I kick myself for
selling, it needed new frets badly though and I got a Moserite with the
money.)
