2005 was the Best! was: Best of 2005?

Ferenc Dobronyi (ferencnd) - 17 Dec 2005 12:06:05

Look at it from the other direction- all the great CDs
released helped to make 2005 the best year Surf Music
has had in a long time. And not just great releases,
but events, tours, reunions and a certain no bullshit
message board that came to the fore (thanks Brian!)
Where to begin--
Halibuts reunion
Satan's Pilgrims reunion
Surf Coasters Tour
Phil Dirt retires (a black day, but part of the year)
Slacktone 10th Anniversary Party
The Phil Dirt Tribute Party
Link Wray's tour
Link Wray's death (another black day...)
KFJC Surf Battle II
Mermen gear stolen, then found and mostly returned...
and please forgive me if I can't sight specifics due
to my non-attendace, but I heard about huge shows in
the Midwest, and the Northeast. Lots of great new
bands from all over the world. Wow...
Please add to the list---
2005!
Ferenc

When you put it that way, this year was huge!
Also the Fathoms back in action and the Ghastly Ones.

<blush> Awwww...thanks.
I had a great surfy year in 2004, and I think the trend continued this
year for me. I was fortunate enough to take part in the Satan's
Pilgrims reunion (both shows! - still reeling from that); plus I saw
Dick Dale again, The Madeira x 2, The Nebulas x 2, The Surge, The
Exotics, Los Straits, The Neanderthals, The Cocktail Preachers x 1.01,
Roger & The Wraybands, and The Hellbenders (!)... I know this doesn't
hold a candle to you guys on a certain coast...but not too shabby for
a Midwesterner. I am indeed thankful for this year.
I'm hoping 2006 is equally exciting!

I'm from that coast and all I saw was the Surf Coasters. I technically
saw my band. I got my reverb unit signed by Dave Wronski. That is
pretty cool. I hope to be able to go to California next year. The guys
in the band had a blast. My year also saw the addition of two new
Jags. We put out our EP this year. Don't have many copies left. They
are rougher recordings due to them being recorded in a rush before the
guys left. We bought nice mics but I got sick so we couldn't finish
all the tracks so we had to use earlier recordings on a couple.

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 17 Dec 2005 15:07:25

Ferenc,
Great list of headlines. I'll add:
-Pollo Del Mar's "invasion" tour of Japan
-Unsteady Freddie's establishment of TwangShebang and NYC Surf Shindigs
-Aquamarines and Pyronauts at California State Fair
-Los Straitjackets/Pontanis/Kaiser George Xmas Pageant Tour
-NESMA becomes a major force in Surf music
My top 3 most monumentous would be Surf Coasters Tour, Phil Dirt
Retires, Link Wary passes.

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 19 Dec 2005 20:28:11

I really need to start a Blog or a Myspace or something, and list al
the shows I've been to. I'd have to say that the whole 2005 year,
but especially the spring/summer of 05 was off the hook for Surf
shows in So. Cal. Many times I had a choice of 2 or 3 different
shows to choose from. Add to that the Huge Tiki sceene goin' on, and
the graduel(sp) surf/tiki crossover/. I had a very busy and Fun
time in 05 and met tos of new fans/friends.
Looking forward to many more killer shows in the Future.
Allready hear do f 3 Slacktone shows in Jan. and Feb.
Everybody keep your eyes peeled for show listings.
I don't wanna see people saying oh man, I didn't know about that.
Why didn't someone post about that.
