The Sellcancers...on 2nd thought...

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 13 Dec 2005 20:29:12

I'm kind of dissapointed with The Sellcancers CD "Exotic Charm". It
has several *really* good surf songs, but the rest just aren't surf.
Sort of jazzy or something. They are great players however. Don't
expect a full on surf album and you might like this. But the handful
of surfy tunes are very good, IMHO.
Anyone else have this?

I'd both agree and disagree--the handful of surf songs are incredible,
especially "Typhoon Sand Beach," "Just a Turkey Step," "Syndicate #6" and
"Sniper Fujiyama." Actually, I think that might be all of them.
But I also dig the softer, jazzier ones, which is honestly the side of surf
music I usually stay away from. Some of it--alright, most--is fairly far removed
from surf, especially in terms of structure, but there's always something
interesting going on. Especially the occasional, effective uses of dissonance.
Their guitarist has a knack for bending your ear with something really
unexpected.
I'd recommend it for sure--Sazanami has song samples up for the entire album.
(www.sazanamilabel.com), and Double Crown had it in stock before they went on
break.

Yeah...Sniper Fujiyama is pretty much worth the price of admission;
but you can also get that on the Continental Sampler...

I can appreciate the playing on the other songs, but they really
didn't do anything for me.
If I understood the note correctly that came with the CD from
Sazanami, I think they have another CD coming out next year.
