Subject: Re: Skaterdater!

Jerry (wipeoutboy63) - 13 Dec 2005 11:51:53

Talk about a blast from the past...I remember being about 12 years old
and borrowing this black-and-white film "Skater Dater" from the local
library. My friends and I all skated, and we
copped some tricks from this movie (this was well before the Dogtown
Z-Boys changed skating style). Now, I realize this was probably the
first surf music I really listened to...it was
nice to get to hear it again.
Thanks, Klas
Anyway, the entire "Skaterdater" album can be downloaded in mp3 format
from the link below (near the top of the website)

Garage....trully superb stuff..... And the "Skaterdater" instro is very
nice.....
Muchos gracias,
Jerry S. (Still having his old Mike Vallely/Powel-Peralta skaterboard
safely tucked away in the attic)

I've never seen the film, but did the Phantom Surfers album skaterhater
have anything to do with the movie through song titles or the rock opera? Or
are the friendly harley riders just a figment of their imagination?

Eric...yeah, I got the impression The Phantom Surfers were doing a
sequel of sorts to that film (albeit music only)...they even got Davie
Allen to help them.
Although I did hear (from Phil Dirt?) that Allen was not pleased with
that CD....?

Do you recall why that was? It's odd that he would collaborate on something
he wasn't happy with and either change things in the process or just scrap
it altogether.

I remember either Deke (didn't he produce it?) or one of the guys
from the Phantom Surfers talking about how they made him use an
original Fuzzrite and wouldn't let him use his standard rig at the
time, which was a rack-mounted ProCo Rat distortion pedal, I
believe. I don't think Allen is particularly fond of the sixties
sound, either of his guitar or the recordings in general, cause his
modern stuff definitely sounds like 'RAWK', with big, heavy drums
and modern sounding bass, so I'm gonna speculate that he wasn't
happy with these aspects. But I AM just speculating.

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 16 Dec 2005 15:19:19

You should ask Davie. He's quite accessible. My fuzzy recollection is that he
was disappointed by the quality and the packaging.
IMHO, it's a very trashy recording, and given the Phantom Surfers' general
disrespect for legends (and everything else), it's easy to surmise that it was
just another rip off. I don't know if they were seriously trying to recreate
something, or taking Davie for a ride, or perhaps something else all together,
but I think it's just not very complimentary to Davie's sound or talent.
