Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: need 4 infos...65 twin reverb custom 15 better late than..........

John McCorvey (eddiekatcher) - 09 Dec 2005 19:49:26

I just now started reading some of these posts.....the later twins (master vol)
non PC board, were somewhat different with different trannys and higher
voltages and such including a different "lead dress" (wires running along
different paths) and are more difficult to mod back to a "genuine BF
configuration". However these amps are not at all bad and I have several in my
piggy back/showman head configuration collection.....the best twins I have are
the 67/68 silver face ones which have a removable speaker baffle which can be
swapped out for one cut to fit a 15....Kinda tight but it can be made to work.
Also the independent speaker baffle will "float" some which adds to the low end
woof....top it off with a good speaker (matter of personal preference) and you
got it.....Those older silver face twins are the last of the bargain amps. Get
one that's all trashed out and restore it. The guys that owned it previously
must have thought it sounded good, as they
apparently used it a LOT........edward k

Yes, there was such a beast, it was just about exactly the
same thing as what Bruno is going after. Cost a lot more
though, because it came stock with a Fender PS speaker
instead of a JBL D-130.
BTW, almost any hand-wired SF can be retrofitted back to
BF specification for little cost in the parts, no sweat.
Labor might be a different story thought, depending on
one's skill level. <g> See page 165 in Weber's book
titled Desktop Reference to Hip Vintage Guitar Amps.
Doing the same surgery on a PCB amp is considerably
more trouble, and the labor costs go up accordingly.
