Blues Deville, anybody?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 27 Jan 2003 13:29:05

Ok, there's a pretty decent looking Blues Deville with
4 10"s in it at my local store. Tag is $495. I was
really liking it in there but didn't really have the
time to put it through all the paces. Has anybody
played one of these, and what are the similarities
between this and the Hot Rod Deville? Aside from
appearance they look pretty similar. The reverb
wasn't quite surfy to my liking, but I can always go
outboard. Any advice would be much appreciated, I
don't know how much longer it will be there.

Hi Richard,
Hmmmm...it's certainly not a bad amp, and quiet a nice price tag too.
The clean sound is O.K. very rich and full with a nice singing at higher
volume, but bear in mind that the 4x10 cabinet is a real ear cutter
especially when played thru on a Jazzmaster or Jaguar at higher volume.
The high notes cut like a swiss army knife. (of course this is my
opinion) You can always try to crank the bass up.
But the Blues De Ville is a nice amp. Anyway all does depent of the
brand of speakers inside the 4x10 cabinet.
Anyway all depends on how you use (and abuse) it and ofcourse you got to
like the sound....

hi richard,
I own a hot rod deville 2X12" and I really like it.
I tested both the 4x10 and the 2x12 before I bought it and thought the 2x12
had more 'depth' - probably cuz of the bigger speakers
of course, if I had more $$$ I would've gotten something else, but for the
money they are nice amps
I've heard of people changing the tubes and speakers to get different
sounds/tones with some success.
and they are loud!!! so watch out....

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 27 Jan 2003 18:43:03

Hi Richard,
I wasn't aware that the Blues DeVille came in a 4x10" configuration....cool.
I also have a Hot Rod DeVille 2x12", which is probably very similiar to the
Blues DeVille line. I think Fender just added a "more drive" button to turn
the Blues DeVille's into Hot Rod DeVilles. The blooz guys couldn't get them
to distort since they are very clean. These are good amps, IMHO, and can be
very clean and LOUD. And mine is pretty heavy too. My reverb is good, but is
permanently retired now that I have the outboard unit. I don't have much use
for the "drive" setting and the "more drive" is just way too much farty crap
noize. 60 Watts is probably too much for me, but then again, I'm thinking
about getting something bigger...
=:-O
I bought the amp before I got into surf. I now wished I had bought a more
traditional Fender amp, one with reverb & tremolo.
That does seem like a good price though. Is it used?
BN
PS
I am also "taking care of" my brother's Blues Deluxe, a very nice little 40
Watt amp (1x12"), probably the same circuit as the Blues DeVille. I actually
play that more than my HRDV, it can sound pretty damn good with the reverb
unit. And it matches the reverb unit's tolex. Ha. You can get one of these
pretty cheap on Ebay as I don't think they were too popular with the blooz
guys either (too clean). Another option for you.
And as always, the Fender Amp Field guide's got some good pictures and specs
for these amps:

Oh yes, very used. Not in horrible cosmetic shape,
but not real good either. Slight mar in the tolex and
just general wear and tear from being moved around.
I'm thinking of letting it sit for a couple of weeks
and then offering them $400 on the spot to see if
they'll take it. It could probably stand a cleaning
as well. I'm also wondering...I have not paid
attention to ANY of the amp mod talk on this or any
other forum because I've never really thought I'd get
into it, but if I got this amp, what could I do to it
to surf it out a little more? I know there are mods,
I just don't know what they are. Speaker suggestions?

I have the Blues Deluxe (1x12 40W), which is a great little amp (much easier
on the back than the Twin Reverb with 2x12 JBL's! anybody gotta tribe of
pygmies they wanna loan me to carry that thing?).
The reverb is digitally driven instead of tube, so it's a more lush 'verb
than wet. Roll the tone control down on your Strat and think Eric Johnson.
As James said - this series of amps is LOUD and you're looking at
wake-the-neighbors volume to get the tone to come out. It sounds good low,
but above 4 and it starts cookin.
I paid $400 brand new for this thing in 1994, so $495 might be a tad high, I
have no idea what things go for these days or in your area.
Not that it matters, but I run a MXR Overdrive pedal in front of this thing,
with the amp on the clean channel. With about 30-40% distortion and 90%
level, and wide open reverb, I can get a nice Dick Dale/Miserlou tone out of
it. The overdrive channel on the amp sorta sucks in my opinion, so I wouldnt
let that be a deciding factor...

rock verb (mono_tones_1) - 29 Jan 2003 07:19:10

hi richard,
dont know if you want more advice on the deville, but these are my two
cents.
I had a blues deluxe (1x12, 45Watts), and my co-guitarist in a former band
had a blues deville (4X10, 65 watts)so i have compared.
first of all, the hot rod series does not just have an extra knob, it also
has extra circuitry (duh). You could look up on the fdp or maybe on the
fender site what difference really is, anyway its not really the same amp,
and the hot rods are more expensive.
I cant really say anything on the price since it's so different here in
europe, but to dutch standards the $400 sound reasonable for a beat up
deville, 495 is a bit high....
don't compare to ebay prices of private sellers; buying from a store really
has it advantages, and even two months of warranty can save you a lot of
trouble, in case of hidden deffects.
on the volumes, it's a matter of taste though, the deluxe is really too
loud, but the deville isn't. for some reason ( the 4x10 and a little
differnt circuit i guess) the deville just sounds wy better at lower
volumes. but indeed it's a loud amp.
my personal opinion on both amps: they are excellent, beautiful amps, with
brilliant sound, for any kind of music EXCEPT speedmetal and surf... and
the reverb just really doesn't cut it, so you need an outboard. and to add
to that, for surf you'd want a closed cab in the end....
so, here's my 'real' advice:
- if surf is the only music you play, and you want a definite surf sound,
you're just way better of with a twin, a cheaper bassman+ reverbtank or
something like that. With the deville you'll be dissapointed.
- in any other case, the deville is a great amp: if you play different kinds
of music, the devile will handle all of them (the overdrive is useless
though) and with an outboard reverb you'll have a damn fine surf sound......
but it wont give you that dick dale straight in your face wet sound.
good luck with deciding
PS don't worry about the cosmetics. Just 'paint'it with blank cellulosis
(sp?)laquer for more vintage vibe and it'll look absolutly killer. The only
reason I regret having sold mine is that it looked so cool!

Well I was thinking after messing around with it again
later that day that I would probably need to go
outboard for the reverb. It sounds good, just not
surf. Surf isn't the only kind of music that I play,
but with the other being punk I figure I can play that
through pretty much anything. My objective is a
reasonably priced amp that'll bring that surf sound
and do everything else as well. I also don't want to
spend a lot of money because I'm kind of a hack on
guitar (I spend most of my time on bass) and may or
may not be playing guitar in a band any time soon. I
keep thinking Hot Rod Deluxe if I can find one used,
but does anybody have any other suggestions? I tried
looking around for Ampeg Reverbrockets and Gemini's on
eBay but haven't gotten one for the money I'm willing
to pay sight-unseen.

Hi,
Hmmm. I really prefer the outboard tube reverb tanks rather then the
"simulated Digital" reverbs like the Danelectro Spring king or the
Electro Harmonix Holy Grail. I find the latter to work great on low
volume and for home practising, but when it comes to reheasring with a
band or live playing they don't sound a bit like the real thing. You
really miss the sound of "real springs" they also don't sound that wet
to my opinion on higher volumes of sound.
Anyway in the end it's a mather of taste and money...

I picked up a vintage Premier 90 outboard reverb unit on ebay, for just
a couple hundred.. I can't say enough good things about it. Nice wet
sound, uses the same tank unit as a Fender of the same vintage, at a
fraction of the cost... I love it.
Try searching ebay for reverb tanks, and you'll usually find one or two
of these..

What cobalt said. I have a Holy Grail now, and it's
the best for the money IMO, but it's worth spending
the money for a real unit. I've heard and read lots
of good things about the Premiers.
