In your opinion...

unlunf - 06 Dec 2005 15:48:20

Carol,
In today's enlightened society, I would be remiss if
I didn't leave the door open to everyone. <g> But
since I was speaking from a 'peer pressure' viewpoint,
I'm sure you'll let me off the hook. Thanks.

Would this be the time to point out that the guitar was my
fourth instrument, after clarinet (age 10) alto sax (age 12),
flute (a year later), and then the guitar at 14? It would
be a real stretch of the imagination to say that I was already
in puberty at 10, and that I was just looking for the easy way
to be cool with my friends and possibly even attractive to the
ladies. The guitar actually came along due to Buddy Merrill
of the L. Welk show, not any of the early Rock Pantheon.
Sorry if I disillusioned anyone, but there it is. Surf didn't
enter my life until well after Dick Dale had done his thing....
it didn't hit the Northwest scene for maybe a year after it
was already throbbing in Socal.
And yes, I was motivated. I didn't have a voice with which to
sing back then, I still don't have one now, and I don't intend
to even try to get one at any time in the foreseeable future.

coming from a drummer, LOL.
as a matter of fact, I picked up my wife playing guitar, or rather, she
picked me up, me being the cool kid aplaying guitar at that particular
party. of course, ever since she prefers me stating other reasons to
play.

Yes unlunf, your learning of instruments pre-puberty would not have been done to
impress girls. In your early years you would have learned those instruments to
impress yourself or your family or your teacher. If you did it for none of those
reasons, then you didn't stick with it for very long.
You took up the guitar post puberty. It's interesting when I think this through
that the guitar is largely played by males and it is a rare individual who takes
up the guitar up pre-puberty. There's probably a good statistical study there
relating the guitar to sex.
