Need help soldering wires on Squier Strat

Richard (errant_jedi) - 26 Jan 2003 19:20:10

Ok, I got one of those really cheap little Bullet
Strats in a trade with a friend of mine who wound up
snapping off one of the two wires that go on to those
little prongs at the input jack (sorry if I'm a little
vague, but I'm new at this). He tried to strip the
wire to give himself more to solder back on, but he
wound up just breaking what little there was off and
then forgetting about it and trading it off to me
later. Well, now that I've taken that other piece of
wire out of the main wire (outer is yellow, inner is
white) and soldered it back on (and made a fine mess
doing it) it's not working. I assume that it's done
basically the same way on all Strats so I'm wondering
if any of you Strat owners out there could toss me
some advice.
This will definitely be the last Indonesian made
Squier I mess with...

The Indonesian strat I bought was in horrible shape, brand new. I'm glad
I got it to build on, because as-new, it wound up being unplayable. The
neck warped significntly after only a day out of the store. During
dis-assembly I dscovered the thing appeared to have been put together
while the paint was still wet, as it adhered to the bridge, and had got
onto some of the wiring.
It's odd, because my Squier Jazzz Bass, also from Indonesia, is a
fantastic piece I've never had any complaints about. It must be kinda
hit-or-miss over there.

I've pulled out the bits I took off my squier.. as I see it, there are
three wires to deal with. the primary wire contsins the two subwires
which hook to the plug socket. you have a whte, and a bare metal. Is
this the wire you were talking about? It's red on mine, not yellow.
There's also the ground wire which runs to the bridge.
If you've stripped back the wire and it still won't work, the only
things I could suggest would be, maybe you caused a break in one of the
wires during the wire stripping? You might want to just replace the
wires with new ones - or maybe you soldered them on backwards? Did you
try swapping them to see if it made a difference?
How badly did you bollock up the plug when you soldered? you might have
a short, with solder touching where it shouldn't..
that's about all I've got.
hope it works out for you.

Hey, I did it over again and it worked perfectly this
time. I need to invest in a decent wire stripper.
Thanks a lot.
