recording again / question and realization

Neal S. (memoryover) - 02 Dec 2005 22:23:12

maybe im the only one that it took so long to "get it". but maybe i can help
some other people out that just dont know whats wrong with their home recording
( specifically DI people ). I dont know if DI is really a thing of this board
since you most of you guys have incredible equiptment anyway.
if you guys remember i had problems with my tone, and recording my strat DI
via either POD / mixer ( hardware ) or NI Guitar Rig ( Software Modeler ).
Phil, DP, and others helped me out and i think i achieved the best sound
possible with those units. Phil even got me to buy a mic and try micing an amp
( 90's crate 1x12 ). Micing did help quite a bit, the sound improved greatly
over modelers.
Overall i still wasnt satisfied. I have about 250 wav samples stored on my
computer from all kinds of tests, differnt configurations, anything i could
think of, or have read about. especially when it came to distortion, the sound
was still real muddy, weak and distant to what i had been comparing. ( for any
of you that know 'the wipers', how do they get such an upfront clean distorted
tone on 'the power of one' ? ) anyway....
my friend just bought the fender hot rod deluxe. i told him to bring it over.
i miced it with my sm57, through my behringer mixer to the computer same as
everything else. there it was CLEAR AS DAY. When i transfered it over to other
players such as my stereo and boombox, it sounded incredible. full of life !
sweet, deep, well rounded TONE. I couldnt beleive it. even the tube distortion
translated so much better to recorded medium.
then it got better !
after i scoped out the amp, i noticed the speaker was positioned all the way
to the left of the case. I was pretty much micing the wood at first. yea, laugh
it up ! heh.
i guess i got so wrapped up in the digital age, and the non linear editing of
128 stereo tracks at once, i never really tried or thought of the simplest
thing. i guess the POD hype and marketing did quite a number on me, but to me,
i messed around with that thing for over a year, and still can only get
somewhat acceptable signals ( i still believe it puts out a pretty good clean
signal, but not like a fender tube amp ! .)
anyway, the fender tube and reverb sound are real inspiring, ive been surfin'
it up all friggen day, i wrote about 10 songs today .now heres the question.
The hot rod deluxe, it shakes my room when its on '2', out of '12'. Without a
neighbor problem what volume level would you guys record at. Now considering
neighbors, have any of you ever built an isolation chamber and have it
succesfully wor,k or maybe come up with another noise solution ?
hot rod, hot damn
neal !

Neal:
Very cool tale of the importance of microphone placement...
(Butthead says: "...he said "wood"! huh huh huhu!")
Congratulations also on your discovery regarding the aural
magic of Fender Tube Tone! Perhaps a more compact (and
quiet)"Fender Tube" recording setup for your NealStudio
might be a tube-driven Fender Champ of Fender Bronco amp
from the 60s-70s. I had a Silverface Champ that was
awesome...my first amp that I put through garage-band hell
and bass playing at 10 volume!!! Blew a couple of speakers
letting my Stevie Ray Vaughn/Jimi Hendix stoner guitar pals
play through... in the end, I traded that cool little Champ
away for something louder...
Champs seem to be in the range of $300 or so on ebay...and
Fender Broncos seem to be going for less than that.
Building an isolation chamber for recording is an
interesting idea, but will require about double the space
of your amp and plenty of sound absorbing material...maybe
a closet would work? You know a coat closet with a real
door tricked out to be an isolation chamber? You'd need a
"false floor" in there and sound absorbing material on the
closet ceiling, walls and door...maybe even leave your
coats in the closet too.
good luck with NealStudio...

I've got a Fender Bassman 20 which is very cool. 18 watt, 6V6 powered, 15"
speaker,
closed back, no reverb, that is great for lower volume recording. Apparently
they only
built a few hundred of these in the early 80's? I got mine locally a few years
ago for $140.
Gotta keep yer eyes peeled for this one.
