Here's a dumb question. I've been window shopping on E-bay and have
noticed that most Dual Showman cabinets (2 x 15") have the 2 speakers
side by side. Every once in a while I'll see one that is oriented
vertically (the speakers on top of each other), with the Fender logo
corrected for this. Did Fender change the orientation of the cabinet
through the years? Or is this something that owners did by just
moving the Fender logo and the hardware for bolting the head on?
Thanks,
BN
The early dual showman cabinets (through 1967) are 36"x24"x11.5", with the
two speakers side by side. It's got tilt-back legs on the 24" sides. Same
size as the 1x15" tone-ring cabinets. In mid '67, Fender switched to a huge
(45.5"x30"x11.5") vertical cabinet. Speakers are one over the other,
tilt-back legs gone, and handles moved to the long side of the cab.
This is not to say that some people don't turn the smaller cabinets on their
side; I do this sometimes with my 1x15" bottom.

"Tone-ring" cabinets were part of the '61 Tremolux (1x10") '61 Bandmaster
and Bassman (1x12") and '61-'68 Showman (1x15"). The "tone-ring" refers to
a metal ring which supports the speaker off an inner baffle that allows for
a complex porting system. What makes the porting system unusual is the way
the tone-ring suspends the speaker inside the port. For a Showman, the
front baffle is cut as if for an 18" speaker, and the 15" JBL is in the
center. Unlike other porting systems, this is very focused, as the speaker
and port sound waves exit at the same place.

Jeff,
The small two speaker cabinets ('62-'67) are sealed with no ports. This is
for all the piggy back amps. As for the later style cabinets, I know the
big Bandmaster 2x12" has rectangular ports off to the side. Haven't looked
inside the others (Bassman and Dual Showman, no post '67 Tremoluxes made) to
know, but I suspect they are. None of the dual speaker cabinets used
tone-rings. In fact, they wouldn't work very well, as the cabinet size
effects the freqency response of porting. A double tone-ring cabinet would
need to be the size of two standard tone-ring cabinets to work. Might as
well just have two standard cabs; much easier on the back.
As for the Mach IV CD - it's coming along. We just recorded five more
originals for a current total of twelve. We've got a few more in progress,
and hope to have a finished product early this summer. All original tunes,
no covers of any wave.
In the meantime, if you want covers, you've got a few more weeks until my
jewish surf record "Meshugga Beach Party" is delivered from the plant.
Sixteen traditional jewish melodies, served up heavy on the reverb. More
details soon.
Shalom!
Mel

I had a Fender Bassman that I bought new in '66 or '67 (can't remember
exactly...too long ago :>). It was oriented with a vertical cabinet (
speakers stacked on top of one another) and the Fender logo was moved to be
correct. If I'm not mistaken the Showman and the Bandmaster were done this
way also. It was a blackface amp, and was purchased shortly before the
silverface amps came out.
